What 10 Civilizations will be in Beyond the Sword?

The Timurids were basically the successor state of Mongols, and Mughals were in turn the "form" Mongols took after conquering half of India. Again, having them besides Mongols would be like including the British Empire next to England.

I hope that I will have some info about Poland in BtS tomorrow :D

I'm about to send a petition to Firaxis to include Poland in Civilization (link to it is in my sig) and the only thing I'm waiting for is support from Polish distributor of Civ - Cenega. I have contact with employee of Cenega who is in charge of Civ-related issues in Poland - I just talked to him and he promised me to ask if Poland is included in BtS add-on :)

So, I hope that I will have some info tomorrow, let's hope that I'll have good news :)

I think the major decisions about this expansion pack are already taken. If Poland (or any other civ) is not in it by now, it won't be in ever.

I decree that a "Native American" civ would be ludicrous. It must be either the Sioux or the Iroqouis. Dave has spoke.

Hear, Hear. As soon as I saw the Sitting Bull art I knew in my heart the Sioux were back. I know on some sources it says "Sitting Bull of the Native Americans" but it's only the first information we're getting on BtS so I think it'll be confirmed as Sioux soon enough. So sue me.

Cool. :)

Personally, I don't think Poland "deserves" to be in Civilization more than other civs (i.e. I wouldn't want any existing civ to "drop out" to make space for Poland), since the entire choice of civs is more or less arbitrary, however it will be cool to play as Poland, if for no other reason, then to make it an enlightened, scientifically advanced country with no Christianity. :p

I really hope that if they are currently planning to have catch-all Native American civ, they change their minds and change it to the Sioux (it would have to be the Sioux if they want to use Sitting Bull) for the final version.

I'm skeptical of the Sioux being a full civilization. They might, but I would rather have the Maya as a new native American civ than the Sioux. Maybe we'll get two...

The thing with the Sioux is the city names--that bothers me. The Sioux were Plains Indians, and did not build massive metropolis. What flustered me in Civ2 was all the Sioux names...such as Wounded Knee. That's a massacre! Not a city!

Makes me wonder what they would use as a Native American/Sioux UU? Maybe a scout that could actually attack?

Any more ludicrous than the Celts?

My 10 new civs:

-Portugal
-Netherlands
-Poland
-Israel
-Byzantine
-Vietnam
-Ethiopia
-Mayans
-Babylon
-Sumeria

Adding peoples like Sioux or Polynesians as civilizations is a bad joke.

-5.Timur/Mughul - Ottoman already included why not Timur?
Timur beat down "invincible Ottoman"(in europe), so Ottoman had to stop
expand to western europe. If Timur couldn't won, european history(and world history too) must be re-written.

Vietnam beat down the true invincible Mongols 3 times so they couldn't expand to the south, otherwise Thais and Khmers would probably speaking Mongolian by now
Vietnam beat down Chinese uncountable times, otherwise Thais and Khmers would have been some kind of southern Chinese
Last but not least, If Vietnam didnt beat France at Dien Bien Phu, there would probably no decolonization and the world map would be quite different than it is today
One more thing! - we need centered Asian civilizaion, if not the largest region on earth don't have its good represent

Would be nice. Maybe they will remove Korea to make place for a centered asian civilization?

No the map is not mine. It's supposed to be photographed in a museum in Malaysia. I dont know when it was made. Anyway, it proved that the story of the mighty Khmer empire is just a myth.

Well at one time ( about the 11 and 12 centuary) Khmer was a Power to be sure but after the ascention of Siam its days as a power were at an end. By the 16th centuary Khmer were paying tribute to Siam after continual invasion by Siam after 1300. At around 1815 Vietnam slowly gained trust in Cambodia and began a policy to make that country part of Vietnam. After many battles (with Siam) and the death of the Cambodian king (Ang CHan) Vietnam finally got what it wanted; Vietnam made Cambodia a province of Annam. This was in 1833. For the next years the vietnamese did all they could to Vietnamize Cambodia even setting up a Khmer queen ( This was deffinatly against Khmer attitude). Eventually it became that Khmer Nobles were given Vietnamese names and had to wear Vietnamese Robes, Monks were defrocked, Buddhist Statues were tore down and cast into cannons, and Confucianism(Though Viet was Buddhist as well it was a differant sect-Mahayana) was made the Religion (Taken from History of Cambodia and Thailand by ML Manich) This was a bit much for the Khmer and they asked the Thais to come back and remove the Vietnamese. In 1845 The Vietnamese left and Cambodia went back to being a vassel of Thailand until the late 1860s when the French became more gready and took cambodia along with Laos.

This is to illistrate just how "powerful" the Khmer were after about 1350. It was a small power in between two Giants. An interesting fact is that a part of Cambodia and all of laos again became part of Thailand in the 1940s in the Siam French war were Thailand defeated the French in Cambodia and Laos (they never forgot the humiliation of having Cambodia and Laos taken from them by the french in the first place) The ONLY reason that a large part of Cambodia and all of Laos is not part of Thailand today is that France promised to Block(backed by the US and Britan) any attempt at Siam joining the UN unles the territories be given back to France...

Reguardless I still see Khmer being put in over Vietnam or Siam becouse people dont know the history at all. Khmer, even at its hight never had the power of Siam or Vietnam...but they built angkor wat. To some that is enough, I guess

Actually the Shans beat the Mongols as well, there were a few differant people who prevented the mongols from going south. But the Vietnamese beat them back several times to be sure. But the first Thais in Nan chao where beaten by them, that is why they emmigrated south to join other thai people alread there. Shortly after you have the first All thai kingdom in Suhkothai in 1238.

Any more ludicrous than the Celts?

The Celts have a good trait combo, and the UU can be usedto a fact, but it's map dependent, I agree, but I would say that it could be fairly useful on a highlands map?

But I don't see the thought of a 2 move 2 strength cheap unit that can be built from scratch that ridiculous... :) (plus, you get one at start). If the map is close you can seriously harm an opponent deeply... it'd be a super ultra early Quechua rush... :)

just an idea ;)

EDIT: BIG Sorry, misread your post, I thought you quoted what was posted just above you (the proposal of a scout uu for the Amerindians... ;)). Well, the celts aren't that ludicrous so to say, I just don't understand why they chose a battle place they lost as capital city. (btw. the place where the Hellvetians lost to the Romans... ;).
mick

Well, it wasn't highlighted in my post but I was responding to something DagenhamDave said about putting in a non specific American Indian tribe. I agree with you about Wounded Knee.

And I think I'm among the minority that think the Celts have a good unique unit.

My guesses for the Tenacious Ten (in no particular order):

- Portuguese
- Dutch
- Babylonians
- Mayans
- Sioux (I would hope they split "Native America" into at least two civs)
- Iroquois
- Polynesians (Maoi Statues)
- Hebrews (Judaism without a civ? please)
- ONE SE Asian civ (given inclusion of Swedagon Paya, it will likely be Thai-based, so probably Siamese)
- ONE East European civ

My great fear after seeing some of the concept art is that Firaxis will invent a future civ, which would be ABSOLUTELY disgusting. The reason why I am a Civ fan, and did not stray to other empire-building games was that Civ did not stray from history. Making up mech units and the like is for kids, not true Civ fans!

- Hebrews (Judaism without a civ? please)

Imagine seeing this message pop up: "The Hebrew civilization has been destroyed!"

Given the history of the Hebrew people, I don't think this is something that would go over well.

Just my thought.

Happy Passover to any Jews!

I doubt we would see an Israelite civ due to the fact that seeing them adopt Christianity or Islam as their state religion would be really weird.

And as I have always said, if religions are similar no country should be included because of religion.
