What Basic Tips Would You Give Someone New?

It would be nice if someone could lay out some basic tips for Colonization. I know that things can get real complicated, I just want the bare, bare black and white tips to build a firm foundation. Like in "Civilization IV" Build 1.5 workers per city. Or, get your settlers out early. Or, go worker first then build a warrior. Things like that really help. This could be a helpful reminder to anyone else who is interested or new like me. Anyway, thank you. Civmonger

Sell you starting guns to the nearest village, and get some scouts ASAP. Seasoned are best, but any colonist on a horse will do. Visit villages for free stuff.
