finished O'bama's " Dreams from my father"
very well written, an engaging read.
an interesting memoir....

reading Turtledove's "Colonization - second contact"first book ina trilogy.
alternate history, in which the lizards invaded the earth, after WW2.
nice so far,but not great.
if it picks up enough to continue with the trilogy ill update.

Professor George Coedès - Indianized States of Southeast Asia.
Professor George Coedès - Historie ancienne des etats hindouises d'Extreme-Orient.

O. W. Wolters - Early Indonesian Commerce, Origins of Srivijaya.
J. C. Van Luer - Early Indonesian Trade.

The Brief something life of Oscar Wao in addition to volume 2 of History of the Byzantine Empire. A kusine of mine suggested it.

Bound by Sally Gunning. Well, actually I just finished it, but I don't want to start a new book until I finish all of my Consumer Economics work. So... Economic Issues for Consumers, 10th edition.

Weapons of Choice by John Birmingham, along with an anthology of essays by Bertrand Russell.

Finished the Goldsworthy book, was amused by the last line. ("You know, people are kinda stoopid." For what it's worth.) Am going through Will Durant's The Renaissance and The Reformation for purposes of refamiliarizing myself with the 15th century, but those are secondary concerns compared to Massie's Castles of Steel, about the First World War at sea.

Approaching the end of Jeff Shaara's The Rising Tide, about the WWII Africa and Sicily campaigns. I've been taking my time because the sequel was just released in paperback. The book is fantastic. If any of you have read Jeff Shaara you know how he breathes life into these historical figures.

started "Malt Whisky Companion" by Michael Jackson
(no. not that MJ. the other one ;))
reference book, about the history, manufacture and styles of single malt whiskys.
if you like the brown nectar, you cold find it interesting.
found it online, in PDF format quite easily too.

I just finished Selected Essays[/b], a compilation of some of Michel de Montaigne's essays.

Due to the circumstances of this weekend I decided to read Halpern's Naval History of World War I instead (due to portability), finished it. Possibly going to get sidetracked into Riazanovsky's History of Russia due to work. Definitely going to get to Massie soon tho. I hope.

more Akutagawa

Finished Halpern and Massie by now. Am up to Thermidor in Doyle's Oxford History of the French Revolution - because Crane Brinton's books get old after the first ten times you read them. :p

Finished a bunch of books, and started read a lot of new ones. IIRC:

* The West Beyond the West Jean Barman - A history of British Columbia. It's mostly focused on economic and social history (there's a lot on labour history here). I wished there would have been more political history, particularly post-Confederation.

* The Dominion of War - A history of the US told through the wars it fought. Most interesting at the beginning, as one of the authors wrote a massive tome on the Seven Year War (French and Indian Wars).

* True North - A History of the Canadian territorial north (Yukon, NWT and Nunavut, which was part of the NWT at the time of publishing).

finished, sort of, with Turtledove's Colonization - Second Contact.
standard alt history FICTION. ;) tnx Dachs
wont bother with parts 2 or 3.

just started: GOD'S EXECUTIONERS Oliver Cromwell and the conquest of Ireland by Michael O'SIOCHRU
he looks at cromwell as a murderous genocidical maniac, responisble for all the woes that happened in that dark time.
a little biased, but im taking this witha grain o'salt as it were.
still looks like a fun read.

the amazon reviews point to another book: Cromwell: An Honourable Enemy by Tom Reilly which is supposed to be more balanced.
which ill try after this.
i think i may have already read it, but that would be 10 years ago at uni...

If you want something better than Turtledove ( :vomit: ), try S.M. Stirling. Other titles that I remember off the top of my head:

The Man in the High Castle
Peshawar Lancers
The Draka Series
Fatherland
Bring the Jubilee

Possibly going to get sidetracked into Riazanovsky's History of Russia due to work. Definitely going to get to Massie soon tho. I hope.

WEIRD. Just bought an old version of this (3rd or 4th edition), will read it but probably be completely off on a lot of...minor details :p
