My favourie civs in every game were always Babylon, Persia, China and Germany, but Germany seems a bit too militaristic in Civ5 for my taste and I don't like that China seems to have a military special ability. They weren't really pacifist, but compared to Europe China as a culture always tended to look down on warfare as a neecsary evil at best.
I guess it will be Persia, but I'll delay my final judgement until I have played all the civs at least once.

The only pity with picking your favourite civ is you won't be able to see your own leader's animation. My favourites are the Persians and Arabs. But Ottomans seem also a good choice. I wonder how Corsairs (naval warfare), Janissaries (melee) and Sipahis (cavalry) play together. In Civ4 the Ottomans were a powerful civ.

I think India would fit with my playing style the most with help to create giant cities. But in the past, the AI rarely has large cities atleast early, so maybe I'd rather play against India with the civ I picked: the Aztecs. Enslavement has always been a fun game mechanic to me.

Greece has always been my favourite civ, and even though I prefer unique buildings over unique units(Greece having no UB's and two UU's), I'll still probably stick to them as my main civ. I just hope they get their own mediterranean city graphics(along with Rome) and not get stuck with medieval castles and such, but that probably won't happen. :(

In CivRev the Greeks had mediterranean city graphics that they shared with egypt. I hope they do this again in CivV.

I don't get why the US is getting so many votes - I see them as one of the least desirable civs to play. The two UU's and ability have no synergy...
a lot of them don't really seem to have much synergy right now. the ottoman ability has something to do with naval units, which describes neither of their unique units. rome can build buildings faster, but they don't have any unique buildings.
for manifest destiny to make sense, it'll have something to do with either getting or keeping land, maybe making it cheaper, like a lot of people on here think. since the minutemen in history got their name from being ready at a minute's notice, chances are that they're cheaper, too.

Hmm, I voted Siam because the elephant unit seemed cool, but now that i've looked at it closer i would say Arabia. Their unique power and their unique building seems trade oriented (as opposed to being war or expansion oriented) as I am more of a building/economy focused civ player.
In the previous game their UU the camel archer was rescourseless. It would be awesome if it was resourceless in Civ5 because now you need more than one resource to support large armies. Such a feature to a unique unit would be pwnage.

How can we decide on what civ is our favourite before we even play the game...

I think that's what the 'so far' bit is for in the question...

Anyway, for me it's a toss up between England and Japan. The Mali and England have always been my faves in 4, and now England looks even closer the the Empire than before, but the presence of Elizabeth ahead of Churchill, Victoria, or even Asquith dissapoints me. And Japan have Zeros. So, Japan.

The Ottoman ability may not make their UU's better, but you'll have two UU's and better naval units all in the same time period. Massive advantage there. Similar thinking with the Romans, who would have two UU's available at the same time. Assuming the AI isn't horrible, no-one is going to have Minutemen and B17's at the same time in the game..I mean there's some that do look worse then the Americans, I don't really see how they're the best at this stage though...

i picked rome because i like thier unique ability. I always try to have my capital as built up as possible, if my playing style gives me a new fasicnating benefit more power to it.

Wait, do we know the features of any of the civs' unqiue abilities yet? Or are we just speculating that "the Glory of Rome" gives a bonus to the city of Rome (which it could possibly not if what referring to the empire as opposed to the city)

No, we do know what Glory of Rome and The Great Warpath is, it was in a deleted YoUTube movie.

my reasoning is the exact opposite: the americans will have a unique unit for two seperate time periods, which sounds pretty cool to me. but each to his own, i guess.

Huh? Why didn't I see this !!! Darn. Wait, so what do these two powers do then?
