What do you think of Galactic Civilizations II?

I love it. Great game. And very aggressive with patches, new contents and that kind of things.

If you're a fan of civ-building games, it's definitely a buy :)

Holy crap, I didn't even see this forum 0.o

It didn't occur to me to look under Other Games because I just assumed they'd all be Firaxis/Microprose games... my bad.

Well I have GC1 and it addon, which I played only a few game and none with the addon.

I have GC2 gold and just played a few. It is very similar to I. Not bad games by no means, just not getting me to play much. I do plan on trying a few more runs soon.

I don't know. I love sci-fi, but game is a bit... odd. They tried to include a bit of humour, but I don't really like the result.

I recently bought the game (found it cheap in the local store) but couldn't find on the official site any info about patches. The only download was for the demo. Where do you find them?

Also, are the campaigns any good?

Enjoying it so far.

You go to StarDock Central and select Games. It will show your current level and any updates. If an exist for your levle, then use the update button and it will apply patches.

Last time I looked, it had one for 11/17 or 20th, forget the date.

I love Gal Civ 2. It would be more awesome though if it would update the game sometime this century.

The computer I play on is not attached to the net, so I have to download it from another computer.

Galciv2 is a great game. As mentioned, Stardock provides great support in terms of patches. Game runs with no CD required in the drive. You can design your own ships-- both capabilities and appearance.

On the otherhand, I'll be honest that I play Civ4 more often than I do GalCiv.

I'm usually not much of a sci-fi fan but for GalCiv 2 I make an exception. Very challenging AI and once Twilight of the Arnor is released there will be even more variation in gameplay.
The thing to keep it interesting imo is to try out different civilizations (especially once they get unique technologies), different settings and try to pursue another kind of victory. In the beginning I made the error of sticking too much to exactly the same setup, then it can get old quite quickly.

It's not a bad game, but it isn't really up to Civ standards, mainly due to rather screwy balance in many places.

The support for the game I have to say is terrible - if you have an offline system you have to jump through endless hoops to complete basic tasks - just stick the patch up for download for heavens sake! The fact the more recent patches break the game for computers with certain video cards just adds insult to injury.

Well, the patching system is done in such a way to negate the need copy protection from what I understand. Yes, it isn't effective for everyone, but sadly developers can not always do things for 100% of the consumers. After all, if copy protection were in place, using say Starforce, then there will be people out there who won't buy it. Other than that, the actual support, when there is a problem I found to be great.

I've also had a small problem with my video card, but the simplest way to resolve that is to restart, thankfully the game doesn't take long to load.

This game is worth getting I reckon if you need a break from Civ. In some ways, I'd say its under-rated, but it does also require a fair bit of micromanagement at times.
