Tried it once.
One of the few alcoholic drinks I don't like at all.

I think they're NOT JUST A GODDAMN CATCH-ALL NAME FOR WHATEVER COLORFUL SUGAR CRAP YOU SERVE IN A MARTINI GLASS TO WOMEN WEARING TOO MUCH MAKEUP [pissed]

Yeah, all the fruity martinis or whatever they are seem wayyy different from the "classic" martini. I would probably like one of the fruity ones as an occasional "sippy" drink, but it doesn't seem like a martini at all.

Mr. Martini served martinis in Bedford Falls, so I think martinis are classy.

"Vodka martini, shaken, not stirred."

Martinis are serious business... basically 3 drinks in one. Watch out!

I used to go for the fruity martinis but have gradually shifted my taste towards drier ones, such as vodka martinis. Mostly this is because I like the olive saltiness combined with the strong quickly inebriating vodka. Also, I don't like the taste of gin.

The first martini I ever ordered (at a martini bar) was a classic.. with olives.. the way James Bond likes them.

And it was so horrible I couldn't finish it and haven't had a martini since.

 Just funny the way you put it.

I've always wanted to try one mainly for the James Bond connection, but this would probably be what happens to me if I tried it.

The only form of a martini I ever have is something like a cosmo with dinner. If I want something dry, which I usually do, I go for vodka shots, scotch on the rocks, or vodka tonic. I don't like olives.

Pretty much what Disgustipated said. I like black olives on pizza or in pasta. But, olives don't sound appealing in a beverage. And I've never actually tried a martini to figure out if I like them.

I think the drink someone prefers can reflect on them, though it can also simply reflect their background and tastes.

Olives add a great brinieness to martinis. Very nice.

Meh, better, less classy ways to get drunk, and I likes it that way!

Besides, Martinis aren't in. The true hipster drink of choice, direct from hipster central (UCSC) is the White Russian, or so it seems going off my hipster friends.

Which pales next to a Bloody Maria.

Beyond the glass, and the shaking/stirring dilemma, I honestly have no idea what a martini entails.

Gin and Vermouth.

There are variations like a Gibson which has a garnishment of pickled pearl onions, or a Dirty, which has olive juice brine mixed in.

Generally, all will be shaken... shaking means putting it in the shaker with ice, to cool it, which is critical...

A standard martini is made with gin... and a splash of vermouth... generally, they pour a bit in the glass, then dump it, leaving only the amounts that stick to the glass (as alcohol binds to glass... also called "legs" sometimes in the wine world).

A dry martini is more like 1/2 a shot of vermouth (or, to taste)...

Dirty means olive juice generally...

I prefer a dry, dirty vodka martini (instead of gin).

I don't drink hard liquor much but I am a bit of a snob when it comes to martinis. Bombay Sapphire. I like to make them dry, and a bit dirty. I usually hesitate to order dirty martinis when I'm out though -- a bartender once gave me one that basically tasted like alcoholic seawater.

I find that extreme cold numbs my tastebuds and masks the subtle herbal notes of the gin and vermouth. So I make mine stirred, never shaken, and pick up my glass by the stem so the warmth from my hand doesn't kill the drink.

Don't even get me started on that vodka nonsense.
