In common parlance what have you always took the term intelectual to mean? Simple question? Let's see some honest answers :D

A smartass...

Someone who spends a great deal of time reasoning.

1. appealing to or engaging the intellect: intellectual pursuits.
2. of or pertaining to the intellect or its use: intellectual powers.
3. possessing or showing intellect or mental capacity, esp. to a high degree: an intellectual person.
4. guided or developed by or relying on the intellect rather than upon emotions or feelings; rational.
5. characterized by or suggesting a predominance of intellect: an intellectual way of speaking.
–noun
6. a person of superior intellect.
7. a person who places a high value on or pursues things of interest to the intellect or the more complex forms and fields of knowledge, as aesthetic or philosophical matters, esp. on an abstract and general level.
8. an extremely rational person; a person who relies on intellect rather than on emotions or feelings.
9. a person professionally engaged in mental labor, as a writer or teacher.

I'm not sure, but I assert that the mental ability to communicate effectively in your native tongue is a prerequisite for intellectualism.

People who prefer reasoning as their primary mode of conscious thought, regardless whether or not that person is actually smart enough to be reasoning well, or reasoning from a wise starting point or reasoning-path.

I think I replied in the "are cfcers intellectuals".

Basically, educated, cultured people who discuss and debate a lot.

I'd go with that but I want to see what people think?

I fit all those criteria well cultured not so much but I do indulge in it, if you mean literary and musical pursuits, but I am educated, and I do debate an awful lot, especially on philosophical issues although not so much on here, as I think most people don't really know alot of philosophy, but there are some really knowledgeable people here so when they come a knocking it's nice to enter the debate only to show my ignorance and perhaps learn something new:) no offence but I like discussing it more with people who have done alot of reading in the subject, so I talk to my friends about it more and those who know about the subject on here, although to be honest some people just naturally are good at it, like Bozo for example who has a keen philosophical mind, always a pleasure to talk to him, or Bird Jaguar, or Narz, and occasionally fifty when he's not fighting the power :) and Cartesian Fart and Ayatollah So, to name but a few and forgive me if I missed your name, oh Gothmog's a good one to talk to too. And that's no reflection on anyone esle on CFC. Just that alot of threads tend to be a little odd?

See Al'Costa's post #3. Since that's what I posted a couple hours ago :)

Being intellectual essentially means being able to write posts like that.

Oh and Al Costa as well. now he can talk a good talk :) Even if he is only 5 years old ;)

And Swedish it's kind of covered on the other thread, I wouldn't wager that he'd allready read it. But on the other hand we are talking about Al Costa, he might of just looked it up, like anyone should of done.:)

Does this mean intellectuals copy 'n paste from dictionary.com? Because I'd be a freaking genius if it was. :p

Hey, you watch it. 16 FYI.

I did read it, but you asked, so I answered. :)

I have no clue what that word is. I have never seen a word spelled that way before. ;)

You mean cut and paste something directly from a dictionary? Because thats what he did. Is that what being an intellectual means?

@ Alcosta: You beat me to it.:goodjob:

depends:

when I use the word, I refer to someone who is very knowledgable in a certain field, and who can discuss matters in that field with clarity. When I say "very knowledgable" I dont mean "has read a few books on"

when some people use the word, they are refering derisively towards the "ivory tower" guy who is detached from the real world.

when Sidhe uses the term, it seems he means someone who likes books and who can kinda-sorta articulate themselves in their native language, and who uses the term "logical fallacy" as often as possible.

when alcosta uses the term, he means whatever is listed on a dictionary.

If you just specifically meant talking, I disagree with you. There was this article in National Geographic (March 2005, page 22, if you have the issue) in which there is this autistic teenager who cannot talk, but he can write instead. He's seems to be an intellectual, though, writing two books about his struggles in life. But if you were including communicating by writing in what you said, yeah, I'd agree. But being able to communicate is already important...

I usually regard an intellectual as a person who is well-knowledged in a number of fields, and can apply that knowledge to their surrounding environment.

My idea of an intellectual is someone who has little or no common sense, but claims to be 'intellectual' because it inflates their opinion of their self. They typically lounge around in smoking jackets, sipping brandy or whatever, while discussing crap that no one is really interested in, like the mating habits of the Zambizi day fly. They exude an aura of superiority that is truly sickening as it is false. They are above physical tasks as that type of thing is for the 'common' folk.

For the life of me I have no idea why anyone would desire to be considered an intellectual.

I think of an intellectual as someone who is concerned primarily with ideas, regardless of their practical value. An intellectual presented with an abstract problem would never say "Either way you get the same result, so it doesn't matter". I guess the classic example might be a mathematician versus and engineer: they might be struggling with the exact same problems, but once the engineer applies it to a real-life situation it stops being an intellectual pursuit.

Second, I think of an intellectual as someone who doesn't defend "their" position. Whatever they think is just the logical conclusion of the information they are presented with. So when new data appears, they can abandon "their" old ideas and assimilate the new information without feeling a sense of loss or need to be defensive.

EDIT: Great example: Woody Allen is not an intellectual, but most of the characters in his movies are.
