what if Christ was learned to be a [definite] agent of an alien civilization?

let me begin, by asking if the allowed spaces for a thread title have been shortened- if so, that sucks.

now then, here is the question itself- while reviewing documentation can be found here, I once again came upon the novel little question of what if Jesus was an alien. I asked it once before, but that time was dumb, and ever Christian in the land just felt compelled to post their beliefs or some crap like that, which is more or less BS in terms of actual answering anything. so lets hope try 2 will carry on better, shall we?

Now, here's the beef of the situation: Alien civilization has been officially recognized by the US, and European Governments- soon followed by the Russian government as well, following the west’s disclosure- and to that end the US has released substantial amounts of information regarding extraterrestrial beings, and their interactions with Earth, which have been going on for millennia, but mostly for no purpose- Earth served as an interesting way point to explore and look over while otherwise the aliens were consumed with going to planets past us. That is, Earth was like an intergalactic pit stop between several major destinations, and by virtue of its location, became itself a site where many a race would occasionally plop down and have a look around once in a while.

For the most part, all of these species took little interest in humanity, some would be benevolent to humans in early societies, other malevolent and the results of such strange experiences formed the basis of Human myths and legends regarding monsters and Mythical beasts good and bad. Most of this doesn’t come at a huge shock, just is rather disturbing, and perhaps hard to swallow for the population that so much of the "butter of the bread of human culture" is based on intergalactic travelers that have shuttled down to take an intergalactic leak by the trees over yonder, and give the locals something to talk about once in a while.

However, while nearly all of this interaction between early man and its proto/early civilizations mattered for squat other then the odd tale of goblins who would make your shoes in a night, but try to steal all your kitchen ware by mourning, their were a few instances of aliens having notable contact with humanity, and these events were generally profound- in this regard, the most "important", or at least event with largest impact was the initial creation of Christianity.

The motives of those beings who would have initially placed Jesus on earth had good aspirations, create a human with augments, perhaps technological or even genetic in nature (virgin birth) that would allow for this Human to engage in activity of high technology, either knowingly, or unknowingly, and through the inability of the humans around him to know what they were looking at, feel that what was technology was a gift of god. Indeed, one can see how it would be fairly easy to mask any sort of Alien craft activity during his life with being angels or other signs of god- or perhaps since so little of Jesus's past is known, perhaps this period was just directly spent with said aliens. regardless of, and even regardless of weather or not Jesus was in fact aware of the situation at all, are beside the point- the intentions of the project were to spawn a more peaceful culture, more similar to their own the predominantly warlike cultures that inhabited the earth at that point.

Rather obviously, the action failed in terms of what the religion they established was meant to do, for the most part but it spread the idea, sort of. The clincher for this "new history" was verification by a set of ambassadors from said race verifying it, and even giving detailed records of the entire operation- pictures, recordings, transcripts, everything.

The question I pose isn’t if Jesus was one or not -i don’t care what your opinions on it are, this is just a specific question, set in a specific situation- but its what would the reaction among the populace be? Would be an embracement of a "false" religion to better be "one with our alien brothers", embracement because of simple awe of these being and their superior technology, or would it instead lead to a "great purge" of anything considered to be of non-earth origin in terms of culture and religion in an effort to make Human culture Human, and perhaps taken up zealously by some in order to "compensate for living a mistake" or something like that- but the question is rather up in the air- my question as such, is what would your feeling on the subject if the above was true, and what are your thoughts on what the consequences on global culture would be.

I think the knowledge that intelligent and interventionist aliens would utterly change my outlook on life!

how so? :hmm:

This is pure Blasphemy. I do not believe that Jesus Christ is an agent of an ailen civilization.

See my previous thread on what happens when a religion's core is conclusively disproved by scientific evidence:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=160378

Also with doomsday cults. A common thing is that when the world doesn't end they will say, "It is because of our faith that the world didn't end." Basically the thing is, history shows that even if you *can* prove that a religion's beliefs are completely false and they accept this scientific/historical evidence (e.g. the world didn't actually end on Day X is pretty hard to not accept), people will never accept that they were wrong. Cognitive dissonance will spring into action. Some story will be spun. It may take 300 pages to explain one paragraph and how it does "not contradict the new evidence" requre some dramatic leaps of faith in itself, be self-contradictory and contradict the dogma of the last few hundred years (which the religious will claim was never the actual beliefs of their faith despite reams of evidence to the contrary) but the faithful will then retire, satisfied that they can "explain it all away".

If that fails, they can just claim that the aliens are lying and it's a conspiracy to take over the Earth by lowering morale. Then they can go and declare religious war on the aliens.

Sorry to get a little off track, but Uiler, nothing was disproved and it is not the religion's core.

So. I honestly don't know what I would do. It is possible that Jesus was the Savior even if he was from another planet - would it prove the Christian idea of atonement to be false? I'm not sure. I believe that Jesus visited other planets (hey, why not?) so it wouldn't be too 'out there', but it would probably shake my faith at least somewhat.

It's a "what if" scenario.

Speaking 'what if', I think that ultimately it would not end Christianity. In some form at least there would be some who held that Jesus really was the son of God, even if he wasn't human, and that what he did will redeem us from sin.

Convert to Islam, since it and Christianity have been at each others throats most of their history, it is safe to assume that Islam is not an Alien attempt at controlling us. (gets tin foil hat out)

This is pure Blasphemy. Jesus Christ does not exist. Xen shall be executed for promoting such false diety.

I dont care.

@Uiler- nice explination, its one of the scenarios I figure woudl happen in such an event, though I still think that the consequences of such would probably lead to a decline in christianity (at least) in terms of numbers of adherents, and perhaps the leval of devotion given by many of those who do still "keep the faith"

@Eran of Arcadia- given the scenario as I intended it, none of the new testament (at least) is any longer "true" and everything Jesus undertook, weather he knew it or not was by the puppeterring strings of an alien race.

say thanks for trying, they were good teachings I'll still try to follow anyway.

Sure, that may be the case, but what would people think?
Actually, hypothetically I would possibly convert to Islam, unless I was somehow able to get reassurance from God that Jesus is the savior of mankind anyway, alien puppet or not.

The LORD works in mysterious ways.

If Christianity is a farce, wouldn't that pretty much discredit Islam if they believe Jesus was a prophet of the God of Abraham?

well, considering that Islam is based upon christianity, I would think thats a rather faulty choice. Mabey this shoudl have been somthing about the isralites so i could affect all of the big 3 major western religions at once.
