What if you were Russian in 1942?

I made this thread because, I have made a lot of threads about patriotism. I thought of a idea about a time or war,death,suffering under a dictator. The time is 1942 the place the U.S.S.R. The Germans have took several Russian citys. The goverment moved oil refineries,armorys etc. east at a fast rate whice was hard on the people of Russia. Many died if you tryed to run you would be shot. Stalin refused to send aid to the defenders at Stalingrad until the Germans had broke through the line. Rostov had already fell. and Several other citys in the Crimean region (south Russia). I know Operation Uranus Marshall Zhukov and General Vasilevsky had broken the German flanks. But think about all that happend BEFORE the battle of Stalingrad. Would you still fight for you homeland or surender to Germany?

Fighting the Nazis was a worthy cause whatever your nationality, so yes, I would fight.

As i russian i would not have many choices. The red army wasn't a volounteer army, and when the german guns are before you and the own guns behind you...

Fighting against a agressor is often not only patriotism, but needed. Hopefully such things will diminish with time.

I wanted to tell "Yes", = "Da" . "Davarich" = "Comrade". I know what "spasiba" means.

That is how a Russian would tell, but I don't know how that is written.

But then, what do i know?

I can't really say.... you'd have to have the experiences of those, and loose the ones we have now. Moot point, methinks. Considering how many russians at the time were very nationalistic, I would guess I would be much the same.

Ok, I've found it! "Tovarich" or "Tovarish" means "Comrade". Search engines are always useful.
Russian: tovarishch. Old Russian: tovarishchi.

Hmm...I though tovarishchi was the plural of tovarishch.

Then again, I've never studied the language in any detail. All the russian I've picked up as been from Tom Clancy books.

Even if I had felt disloyal to my government I would not have seen the Germans as liberators and therefore would have fought for the defence of my home and family.

I would tend to go for the German side, as they had rather spiffy uniforms - But eating lead and horse meat is not such a great diet.

On the Russian side, great battles, grateful women, tons of vodka and brutal discipline....

And hand to hand fighting with shovels!

If I had to make the choice I think I would be an Sturmovik pilot!

Firstly I doubt I would have had a choice in the matter. Had I been still under Russian held lands I would have been drafted anyway...

I would probably have chosen to serve though if I had the choice...

Hmm looking at the poll options, it's 1000 times better to choose to fight whatever the reason. Stalin and the USSR didn't treat very well POWs that they recaptured....
