What is Israel hoping to achieve in the long run?

I think the Israelis want to show that they will not tolerate attacks on their cities, but more importantly, they want to find evidence that Iran and Syria are supplying these rockets.
Speaking of rockets, I heard on the news that they aren't doing much damage, if any at all: they are launched far away from Israel's borders and cannot have success(of course it's good they don't have any success, I'm not suggesting innocent Israeli-civilians should be killed, for Christ's sake). It just doesn't make sence: the fear that makes Israel so far to have killed ++200 civilians is rockets that at the CURRENT stage cannot do damage.
I wouldn't want to know what would be the outcome if the rockets indeed were better and/or more advanced.

Well, the rockets being used now are much better than the ones they were using before. If this keeps happening, they will eventually start to do significant damage.

@luc: Who is this Ilan Pappe? He says he's taught at Israeli universities for a quarter century, yet seems to regard Israelis as "them".
