What Is The Greatest Painting That Has Ever Been Painted?

And who can forget the Mona Lisa?

I have been censured for a classic. *shurg* only in America

And there wasn't even any visible nipples on it. Fascists!

My vote goes for Starry Night by Vincent 'Could you repeat that?' van Gogh.

MrPresident reserves the right to change his vote on this matter but unfortunately he lost the right to change his underpants in poker game.

You think that also? :D

If I could work out how to attach more than one per post I would do so.

There is none. Rather its all subjective as to personal preference, after all, what do you base the criteria on? th ebrush stroke, the technique, the style, the painter?
Life is all about making decisions. Having said that making a decision on an internet forum that will have no bearing whatsoever on your life or the life of another doesn't exactly rank up their with the great life-changing decisions. So, just choose a damn painting(s) or don't post at all. Simple.

Here's a shout out for one of England's finest painters, Lawrence Stephen Lowry. This is, 'The Fairground at Daisy Nook'.

Also here's two of England's most famous painters, J.M.W. Turner with 'A fire at sea' and John Constable with 'The Hay-Wain'.

The greatest painting ever? I wonder how we all differ in our definition of "Greatest".

Well, in my opinion the greatest painting is the one which conveys the greatest emotion, and that feeling where, while you stare at the picture, nothing else in the world matters. The one which takes me as far from reality as possible.

I find many of these in music, but in painting?
After a quick search, here are some I like:

(A Monet Impressionism work.)

Wow, this one is excellent in my untrained taste. Makes me want to pay more attention to fine art.

I say the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel pretty much has to be uncontested greatest piece of visual artwork ever created. It truly has no peer.

Other than that, it's really difficult to pick.

Tough choice, and I'm not even sure if this is the greatest ever, but Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase no 2" deserves a mention. It beautifully encapsulates the shift to modernism in the early 20th century, not just in art but in our concept of time and our lifestyle as well. (And not to jump on a bandwagon here, but there is something very special about Starry Night that draws you in and keeps you there. Great painting indeed)

I hate that sort of painting. Any little kid could do that.

But that's not a value judgement of course. ;)

Yes, there are jumbled, messy modern paintings out there that do look like kids paintings, but for the one I posted you are sorely mistaken. Look at it and you will see a person walking down stairs, the angles of their arms, legs, head, body frozen in a succession of snapshots, capturing motion in a still frame. It's not random.

James Dietz is my favorite artist. His war prints are the best art I've seen.
