In a vain attempt to raise the cultural tone of this forum and in an even vainer attempt to make a thread that doesn't involve the words, Iraq, Bush, Israel, Britney Spears, and the naughty bits on an elephant, I have decided to start a thread to find the greatest painting that has ever been painted. So, what do you think?

My vote goes for Starry Night by Vincent 'Could you repeat that?' van Gogh.

MrPresident reserves the right to change his vote on this matter but unfortunately he lost the right to change his underpants in poker game.

Christ of St. John On the Cross by Salvador Dali

A copy of this has always been on the wall in our home. It made some impact on me as a child.

Thanks for clearing that up. If you hadn't specified that, I would've assumed paintings that have never been painted before are eligible as well.

As for my vote, count me in for Starry Night as well. It might not be the most realistic or amazing painting, but nothing beats its creativity and [insert artistic buzzword here].

@SeleucusNicator: Now THAT's a picture that'd go great in my living room.

I dunno ... I've always kind of liked this one --

I was being ironic...or was that patronising? It's hard to tell nowadays.

There's no "best painting ever", the 3 above are out of comment, just to make you think about it.

Hmm... is it just a coincidence that they're all French? :mischief:

except for the Vermeer of course.
What a stupid comment.

Well the Sistine Chapel painting seems pretty good. It's even a wonder in Civ.

What is the greatest Painting ever

There is none

rather its all subjective as to personal preference, after all, what do you base the criteria on? th ebrush stroke, the technique, the style, the painter?

Seconded.

The 4 paintings I've posted are not even my favourites. Just paintings that have something I wanted to share with you guys. If I haven't posted the name of the Artist or the name of the Paintings, it was because I wanted people to focus on the image. Unfortunately, the first comment I have is "There's too many French artists in your 4 paintings" (Two). That just proves people don't see the painting as what it is, an image, they see it as a value. That value being given according to the name (and surprizingly, the nationality for Pontiuth) of the Artist.

Focus on the painting itself. Don't consider it's just a worthless image once you don't have the name of the Artist.
