What is your perferred Unique unit?

I have my best luck with Mounted Warriors. In fact I love to play Iros; so much so that I have had to force myself to play other Civs. MW's are my treat to myself once in a while.

It's hard to argue with Mounted Warriors. If they aren't the best, they're close. I can understand the Iro love - it has a personal favorite trait and the strongest trait with an Alphabet start for fast Republic slingshot. In the running as one of the best Civs.

Panzers are epic to go on a blitz after everyone has built railroads. Earlier, War Elephants and Samurai are amazing too. Ancient favs would be immortals, and legionaries.

Dromons rule the seas until destroyers become available. Build them in masses and with their lethal bombardent you sink everything. Thus, they are by far the best naval UU.

I keep forgetting the Dromons. They are another class UU. On Archipelago they might be the best. The nice things is not just sinking everything, but they give very nice shore bombardment so you don't have to send over siege weapons with the first wave of an invasion. I don't play the Byzantines enough.

people still play civ 3? .. why?

Because Civ 2 isn't as good as 3, Doom (and Doom II) don't want to run fullscreen, and I can't get Colonization to work :(

I'll go out on a limb and say you didn't miss much with Colonization. I tried it a couple of times and didn't like it at all. All the additional micro of Civ4 without any of the fun. I'd give Civ4 a try, unless you have an older computer and like large maps. Then 4 isn't as good due to the additional time between turns. I hear 5 has worse problems with this than 4 plus some other problems they put into the game.:(

I'll stick up for Colonization. I actually enjoy it, but I'm a MMing demented builder. Nothing makes me happier than sailing a ship into harbor and making a killing in Europe. But it is certainly a niche game and it is way too easy to beat if you know how to play the game. So, to discourage this, all relevant information on how to actually play the game has been removed from existence. If you stick with it long enough to figure out all (most of) the rules, it's not bad. It most certainly does not compare in any meaningful way to Civ3. It is sort of the evil cousin to Rollercoaster Tycon. Biggest downfall IMO is that the AIs are whimps that don't even try to survive. The worse they do is steal a good FF here and there in the beginning.

Wrong. I loved Colonization. It's just whenever I try to get it to work on newer computers, it either doesn't install right or I play for a few minutes (literally, from double-click to it closing is just a couple minutes) and it shuts down for some reason. It's actually been a while since I've tried it, though, so maybe I'll grab the CD tonight .... Of course, I only finished ... 2-3 games, and only won 1 (as the English :/). Then again, I was a poor player.

Really? The reason I liked it so much is that it reminded me of Civ 1. Of course, it doesn't play like Civ 1 ... but trading was fun, the fact that units could lose a combat and still be around was fun, the units were fun, and it was mildly historically accurate (as far as my 4th-grade brain was concerned). I also have a ridiculous fondness for the sounds completed buildings make. If Civ 4 plays similarly to Colonization, I may just go grab the discs and load it up.

I'd give Civ4 a try, unless you have an older computer and like large maps.
The only maps I play on Civ 3 are Huge Pangaeas :p

High five!

That may have been why I never did too well. I was simply unable to plan ahead for anything. I still can't actually micromanage at all, but I've always loved being a builder. ... ... Followed by zerging my enemies with top-tier units :nuke::king:

Fortunately, I still have the manual. Even if it is falling apart.

I am so showing this to my Colonization CD. Then I'm going to ask it what it feels like to be an evil cousin. I certainly wouldn't know. None of my cousins have so much as a scratch or bruise they can blame on me :mischief: :p

Rali is surely talking about Civ4:Colo, not the original. His assessment of that game seems pretty accurate to me.

Ah yes, most definately. I have never played the original, or Civ1 or Civ2. :( Sorry, I thought that was what we were talking about. I should have been more precise in my post.

Oh. Well, I'm still not very good at Colonization :p Have to dig out the CD sometime tonight and see if I can get it to work, since it is a very fun game.

My Favourite would have to be mounted warriors. Brilliant for early conquests.

Because it's a great game, and I play great games over, and over, and over. I also played some Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (1996) last night, and this week, I double-checked to be sure that I still have Master of Orion 2 (also 1996) on my 'pooter.

Same here. I still play Alpha Centauri from time to time.

That's my same triumvirate of turn-based strategy. :) Great games I'll keep around as long as I have a comp to run them on.
