Gary Numan is terribly underrated, even among the fans of "alternative" music that I've known. I'm not sure why that is. I discovered Tubeway Army relatively late in life, and it instantly secured a place on my vague, mental list of "essential alternative albums." He actually just played nearby the other night, but I missed it (my usual M.O. is to read or hear about fun bands that played in town a day or two later - I think it started with Jane's Addiction in the fall of 1988, a day I shall rue to my deathbed ).
