I read the review of a biography about five years ago about a chap who sounded fascinating but now I cant remember his name.

British naval officer, raised from the ranks, contemporary (in rough terms) of Nelson. Left the RN after facing a degree of snobbery from the other officers. Went to revolutionary south America where he ended up as Admiral etc, and did terribly well.

Thomas Cochrane?

? Maybe, Cochrane was son of Earl of Dundonald but family was broke. Kicked out of Royal Navy in 1814 for political reasons. Did command South American & Greek navies.
