I miss the ability from Civ2 where Barbs would capture a city. Nothing like seeing a few red cities in enemy territory. I miss the random disasters from Civ1 (earthquake, volcano, pirates). Also, in Civ1/2, you could get modern barbarian units in the late stage of the game (riflemen, partisans etc).
If a horde of barbarians approaches a city with insignificant defenders, I usually move the defenders out of the city and spend my treasury. The barbarian horde will sack most of my remaining gold, and reduce the population to 1, but at least my units will remain to protect the city from AI civs. This only works for some small remote cities, when my defences are overwhelmed.
