When and how to choose a victory type?

Hi all! First off, let me thank everyone for the useful comments they make. I started from scratch some months ago (never played any Civ game), and now I'm able to win on Noble. All the threads I've been through helped me a lot! :goodjob:

Lately I've set myself challenges to improve my game on particular victory conditions, and I succeeded, but I often felt like I could've done it earlier, maybe by planning another victory.

So how and when do you guys choose it?

I can imagine that some leaders are more suited for some type of victory than others (I'm not too good at using traits yet)? the starting position? The resources? the neighbours?

Thanks for any helping comments!

Let me be the first one to say: It's Situational :p

Seriously tho: depends on lots of things... Often i start a game thinking "lets do this one with space"... On other days i start random leader and choose something that might fit the Civ/Leader i get... Then again after is start playing - seeing what map/ressources/neighbours (luck ?) i got, i often choose to change the target... Like... "Hm we was aiming for Space, but we are on a biggish continent and our army is on the roll now... so let's make it Domination then..."

You should allways have something in mind: What strategy you want to play, what economy, what victory you might want... But there is nothing wrong with changing some bits if the situation calls for it.

I think the largest thing that influences my thinking on victory type is what my opponents are up to.

If I have an early neighbor boxing me in that's big on military then it might be a good idea to pursue a peaceful victory. If you can steamroll over your neighbors and spread out a domination or conquest victory might well be the thing to go for. If you get lots of different religions in your cities from you OR your neighbors, it might be nice to think about a cultural win.

It's nice to start every game with an idea of how you want to win and see if you can pull Plan A off, but I'd say by the middle ages and time you have met all the rival civs it should be pretty clear which path to victory is best for you. That menu button with the red fist on it comes in handy sometimes for that.

I usually start on the conquest / domination path - If I'm successful doing this, I can usually win any way that I want... except for cultural and diplomatic victories. I'm not to good a diplomacy... especially by the time I've attacked everyone, and personally I find cultural victories a little boring anyway.
