When do I want to build a workshop?

Well civ jewelers alone is worth ~10g per city, give or take. Being the peacemonger i am i dont know what colonial expenses are like, but i doubt it can be as bad as losing the corps money.

Thats really the only corps i care about by the way. Mining inc cant coexist with it and creative is not impressive enough to bother with, and i typically dont need sids to get my cities to size 20, health is usually a bigger concern so i tend to favor enviro.

It can be very bad. And is that ~10g per city assuming any infrastructure like wall street in your corp headquarters or in your branch offices?

You also are ignoring the cost to produce and spread the corporation (initial GP and executives) as well as the cost to import extra resources to boost the corporation.

Without FP 5+ city colonies will DESTROY you. I've seen cities cost 4x their gold output even below 50% science. Colony expense is capped at 2x distance from capitol expense so FP can make a decent-sized colony useful until SP, but SP is such an overwhelming plus there that it owns all other civics in its category.

Or, to put it another way, I've seen my gpt jump by 150 or more in some circumstances the turn I completed FP on another continent ;).

It assumes founding the corps in the WS city.

Im not ignoring it, thats where the ~10g estimate comes from. The corps is worth 12g thanks to having the HQ in the WS city, minus the cost of spreading it. In any given city it can run at a slight deficit or slight gain, but the resources it needs are so rare it doesnt make much difference either way.

Whats that in numbers?

My fp example should give you a ballpark estimate. Just making it raised my gpt by over 150. This was in the late rifle/early infantry range. That's a LOT of gpt, and SP is far more effective, at least 2-5 gpt per colonial city better as it eliminates both distance and colonial expense completely.

I'm sure you can think of a lot of things to do with 150 gpt. During later times, it's probably well over 200. I never really measured it, as in the types of games I play SP is better in general (I can't use FP on 2 continents ).

If you're really curious about it though, I suggest WBing in 5-10 colonial cities and seeing what happens. SP is a warmonger's 2nd dream, behind the police state/jail/rushmore combo.
