When will Turkey Join the EU?

If some people have their way, then never. I still think the advantages to bringing them in outweigh the animosities that keep them out.

Let's make a wager. If Turkey wins the Euro, Istanbul becomes the capital of the EU. If Turkey loses, then Turkey will have to stop pretending to be European.

But seriously, I see Turkey's incorporation depending on exactly how much democracy is involved. If little democracy is involved, then within 10-30 years. I don't see Turkey getting accepted however if the Europeans were allowed to decide. Note however, that this is just my opinion. I could be waaayy wrong.

And who should decide such a thing? I bet that a vast majority of Europeans wouldn't want to be in that kind of "union".

I have no opposition to them joining, but then I am not a European, either. I also have no idea when that would happen, were it ever to.

Ahh, the monthly Turkey/ EU thread. Again I say there needs to be associate membership for a whole lot of countries around the edges of Europe. Free trade and movement with no automatic right to work/ benefits, some development grants but not the full wack. I would set it up so Turkey, Lebanon and Israel become the founders of this associate zone at the same time and see if vast wads of cash cant make everyone play nice.

You can say these for Lebanon and Israel but you must put Turkey in another case.Turkey has a great human power that can be a shield from the threats coming from Middle East(Joining EU takes Radical Islamic terrorists all weapons get straightened to them) and also Turkey can be a door opening to Asia which help us trading with Asia.We should calculate the profits we can get,then we could make clear and nice solutions about it.

This is a thread about Turkey, so Cyprus has to be included as it's a very important point in modern Turkish History.

The best solution for Cyprus is a unification under one democratic goverment. But unfortunately we are not going to get it ... For starters for that to happen the twenty thousand Turkish troops that illegally occupy northern Cyprus must go.

This, so long as it's not too lopsided.

So long as Turkey fills all the other criteria needed for EU membership, I see no reason why they couldn't.

Voted for '25-'30, btw, I think that the whole Cyprus ordeal could still take a while. This is a relatively pessimistic guess of course, I hope it doesn't take them that long.
