Actually, the EU person giving the survey read these names out and the surveyees either gave a positive or negative response to them. So they did not just go randomly name countries.
And Actually the point of my post was that majority of the EU15 citizens did not want states like Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Cyprus in but these nations still got in anyway. Its not the citizens that decide, its the goverments...
To some extent you're right. EU15 citizens were pretty xenophobic and they still are towards the Central and Eastern European members, it's a sad fact.
On the other hand, the poll I've shown indicated that the oposition towards Turkey is much more intensive. The public was sceptical before the 2004 enlargement, but there was no major opposition towards the enlargement. On the other hand, Turkey's potential membership is discussed in many member states and it generates an immense pressure on the governments. France has already anounced it will hold a referendum about Turkey. I suppose other countries will follow.
Politicians can't really aford to go against the public opinion in this.
