Which are your three favourite books?

Come and play with me," proposed the little prince, "I am so unhappy."

"I cannot play with you," the fox said, "I am not tamed."

"Ah please excuse me," said the little prince. But after some thought, he added: "What does that mean--'tame'?"

"You do not live here," said the fox, "What is it you are looking for?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean--tame?"

"Men,"said the fox, "they have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"

"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean--tame?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. "It means to establish ties."

"To establish ties?"

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world . . ."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower . . . I think she has tamed me . . . "

from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I remember reading the little prince, when i was in elementary school. I dont consider it well-written now, although it was interesting, and the desert setting definately had impressed me. I also have another of his books, something about the life of pilots, i think it is called "the earth of men".
You are lucky that spanish is spoken by so many people, this way spanish literature can develop. Greek literature suffers due to having only 15 million readers of the language. I think that only Constantin Cavafy is internationally known + regarded as a classic author (poet) from the modern greek authors.

You´ll always have the classics, The Illiad, The Oddisey, The Clouds by Anaximadros...

Edit: I like The Little Prince because it is a book about feelings, If a book is very well written but it doesn´t trasmit anything then I am not interested in it.

I like it to a degree too, but it is written imo in a childish way. It is sweet, but unfortunately few people behave in such a manner...

As for the clouds: do you mean the play "nepheles" by Aristophanes?

Quite difficult to chose only three, but the first ones to spring to my mind is:

Dante Alighieri - The Divine Comedy
Ludvig Holberg - The Subterranean Travel of Niels Klim.
Luther Blissett - Q

And who is the person in your avatar? :)

(kind of ot: wasnt the composer Grieg a norwegian as well?)

Ibsen national writer? Maybe, depends who you ask. :mischief:

the avatar: Eminescu, Romania IIRC.

Grieg was a Norwegian.

My top 3, i'm more of a mixed reader of History, Fantasy, Thrillers and Scifi books. :)

1. Ten Little Niggers, aka, And Then There Were None, aka, Ten Little Indians* - Agatha Christie

2. All Books of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - J.R.R Tolkien

3. Berlin 1945 - Antony Beevor

* Someone should finally decide what's the name of the book going to be.

Epicure, lettres et maximes ( bilingual french / ancient greek )
Rendez-vous with Rama and the other 3 books by Arthur C Clarke
Li vî bleû ( walloon comic, in walloon )

Aztec - Gary Jennings.

Shardik - Richard Adams.

Discovery and Conquest of Mexico - Bernal Diaz.

I'm not sure they're my favourites, just three that spring to mind. Too hard to pick favourites.

Some people would probably say so, but a better candidate is IMHO Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
I prefer Holberg to any of them.

And who is the person in your avatar? :)
My excellent compatriot, that old dog trooper, already pointed that out; Mihai Eminescu, a very fine Romanian poet.[/QUOTE]

(kind of ot: wasnt the composer Grieg a norwegian as well?)
Yes he was.

1984
Nausea
The picture of Dorian Grey

So far I've read 1 and a half of C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy. By the time I'm done with them, they will probably be my favorite books. Great stories from a great writer. :D

1. The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien
2. Dune, Frank Herbert
3. The Light of Fantasy, Terry Pratchett

In the Balance
Tilting the Balance
Upsetting the Balance
Striking the Balance

:D

up to now LOTR and LOTF (lord of the flies) are the two most popular books here by far. i am sorry to say that i have read neither :( but i have heard good thngs about lord of the flies. I dont easily read anyhing written after ww2 though.

I will have to check Eminescu. Nikolaus Rameau seems to have been another good rumanian poet. I know of his poem "the three horsemen" :)

1. Atlas Shrugged
2. War of the Worlds
3. Martin the Warrior
