Rise of Rome is probably the best one and hardest one too.I like playing Mesopotamia conquest mostly.I like that period of histoty and it's very balanced.I also like Sword of Shogun. I haven't played WW2 and Napoleonic Europe yet.

I liked Mesoamerica the best so far. :goodjob: The first time I played it, I lost, but in losing I learned how to win the second go around. I am having trouble with Fall of Rome. Playing as the Sassanid Persians, I can usually defeat the Eastern Romans, but the Western Romans win before I have a chance to beat them and before time is up. Any hints as to how I can win? At least once? I don't mind losing from time to time, especially if it helps me figure out how to win later on, but Fall of Rome seems hopeless after a while.

Thanks! :D

1) Diplomacy. With Sassinids, you should have a nice tech lead over the Barbaric tribes - so sign them all against WRome for techs.
2) Play on higher levels :crazyeye: The higher, the faster the AI Civs grow, and the more units they have = the more VPs you can get.

Oh, and go to the SG forum, sort by thread title, and read the RBCiv series games; every single FoR Civ including ERome and WRome have been played (the thread all start with "RBC13").

Doc,
thanks for the hints, but I am wondering about something; At higher levels, how do I get more VPs, if the other AI Civs have more units? Does this work only if I have signed the Barbaric tribes against WRome for techs (as you described)?

Thanks.

Rise of Rome was my favorite, my only hate was that you couldnt play the Kelts. And it was way to easy(unless you play it as carthage)

The mesopotamia one was ok, but to short.

i hated the world war 2 in the pacific one, that suked.

Middle ages was alrite, napoleonic ws kinda broing and thats all ive played so far.

I thought the same thing about the barbarian tribes at first, then wondered why you'd want to. The Teutonic Warrior/Gallic Swordsman/Scythian Rider are all deliberately underpowered and the barb situations aren't much better. The Celts are pretty hemmed in to begin with, and doubly so when Rome brings its citizens to bear. I guess the Goths and Scythians could make for an domination win (especially the Scythians) on expansion alone, but that would be a pretty boring game.

I'm playing them in chronological order, and I've gotten to Mesoamerica. My favorite so far has been definitely Rise of Rome. I just love the rivalries. BTW playing as Rome was the hardest if you don't take Carthage early. I prefer Persia.
Mesopotamia's pretty fun if you take someone else over. Fall of Rome is quite ridiculous if both Roman civs and the Persians are eliminated (everyone in the north) or if there are only four civs left, both of which have happened to me.
Middle Ages would have to be my second favorite. I always tend to eliminate one or two other civs in the process. Mesoamerica was very different (irrigated mountains?) and I won unexpectedly a Cultural Victory. I didn't like it that much.

I voted for Fall of Rome. I loved the Barbarism tech tree and the Warlord branch of units. The array of civs to deal with is good. I live in Britain also, so playing as the Celts and kicking the Romans out was sweet! This scenario's excitement level also keeps going up to the end due to having to dispatch both Eastern and Western Rome.

This is quite unlike Rise of Rome which I found a repetitive, constant warring slog (both as Persians and Greeks) against the same few cities until you finally break through, then do the same for the next city till the 66%s show up. There was no diversity in that one just war.

I would have voted for Sengoku but the damn ninjas were bugged. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. That made me so mad. This was a brilliant scenario - new units are great, love the historical accuracy (in places), the tech tree is well conceived IMO. Generally this was a good challenge. But they ruined it! Was this fixed with 1.22?

The Napoleonic Conquest as Britain is an absolute blast. Now that's naval power!!! So many enslaved ships. Russia would be a goody to play too.

Middle Ages is fun but, however authentic the challenge of taking Jerusalem is, it is a little contrived or should I say it's an unusual victory condition. I played this one as the Swedes and after bashing up a few other civs I smashed my way in Jerusalem from my Cypriot barrack town. :D This was fun! I also played this as the Turks and found it much more difficult. Those Bulgars and Magyars do expand right across and they're pretty unfriendly.

Age of Discovery is from one my favourite periods of history and it was great to see the balance between Catholicism and Protestantism being address and also the importance of banking and the printing press in this era. And at last Firaxis drops the PC attitute and includes some good old Slavery! I can't belive they ignored this major factor in world history for so long. This was a colourful scenario to play if a little easy. I'm gonna crank it up in difficulty level and have another go.

Meso was so so but I aint much of a wonder builder.

Haven't played the Americas or WW2 ones yet and any others I haven't mentioned.

BTW - No one can complain that a scenario is too easy - bump the levels to get to the heart of each conquest.

Sengoku is best as it is now, but the others are good too when one fixes some bug in them and expands them. Middle Ages is my favourite, but there are some little things taht should be straightened out...

I voted for The Rise of Rome, because I had such a good time giving Carthage a hard one. Now I think that Sengoku is even better though - the tech tree is simply great, although I kind of raced through it too fast to enjoy it really.
Those Ninjas were no big problem: Once I made sure I could see them, I found means to get rid of them...

I just finished playing Napoleonic Europe Conquests Scenario and I have to say its the most fun I've had on Civ before.

I started as the Russians and assessed the situation to realise that being a considerably strong nation I had a good chance of contesting the victory points win in the time span allowed.

So I started my started my victory location conquest on the neighbouring Prussians. Their land consisted of most of Germany and East Belgium. They had a few little gems to take being Berlin and Frankfurt which once taken gave me a considerable boost in victory points.

I allied with Austria my other neighbours for a little assurrance that there is not two opponents at the same time and kept out of the French battle. That is until the Prussians were gobbled up without an inch of help from any nations, pesky Germans...

Looking strong after conquering the Prussians and only keeping the cities with Victory Locations and razing all other survivors had caused me to have a bad reputation in the diplomatic community. But no one dare take on the might of the Russian Cossack.

You see the beauty about the Cossack was that although the other countries had worthy and if not stronger units then the Cossack, they did not possess 3 move turns every go. Meaning I could attack that one extra time and also traverse the rough Russian landscape to Europe for the long battles ahead alot quicker then they could rush into battle.

After many battles and a few leaders being created, I created 3 armies to move towards France to take their valued VP locations. I ran into some heavy resistance and realised that their might Imperial Guards were ripping my Cossacks and Russian Guards to pieces and just didn't fall like the Prussians did with ease. In saying that I managed to conquer 2 VP cities of them and came close with 15 turns to go for the win.

I decided to make a peace treaty with France and hoped that their may be another way to gain VP cities without straining my forces on the strong French. Then it hit me, beforehand in my quarrels with France they took Frankfurt back off me then Austria managed to take it with little units in a fluke and for some reason it gave more VP points the many of the other locations.

So I had found my "Holy Grail", not sure of the consequences I waged war on Austria with the help of the French in an edgy military alliance between us. To my dismay its like as if the French still had a grudge and did not put many units into battle against the Austrians leaving me to defend my long and VERY unguarded long stretch of conquered cities from Russia.

I got Frankfurt but lost a more major point, Konigsberg. They cut me straight down the middle disconnecting my empire with 5 turns to go. They proceeded to gang up against me with ALL! nations declaring war and trying to hold me out from the win with no concern of France's close trail.

In the end I just managed to hold out but after the official turns were over they relentlessly tore me to pieces from every end! Even the Ottomans had their own pick from South East and gave me hell.

An absolutely awesome scenario which really tested me...

I enjoy Rise of Rome. Trying to win as Greece is a challenge I have not accomplished. I also like Sengoku. Ninjas are a blast. Fall of Rome and Napoleon are the only others I have played. Are there any threads with tips on winning as Greece in Rise of Rome?

madviking, thanks for the welcome. Rise of Rome complicated? It is just a big landgrab, playing as Rome.

Grand Hamster, welcome! What tribe or tribes have played in Sengoku? Imagakawa seems to have the prime start location.

Mesopotamia was OK. I played as Egypt and won easily because once I blocked off the Sinai, noone could get to me.

Rise of Rome was pretty good, as Rome anyway. There's a bug on turn 1 that basically lets you trade for a bunch of free workers and get the whole world ganged up against your opponent.

Middle Ages may be the most versatile conquest. It plays quite differently depending on whether you choose a Christian, Muslim or Viking tribe.

Mesoamerica wasn't so good. Too easy. Resources and luxes galore. That unit you get near the end (forget the name) is way overpowered.

WW2 in the Pacific was frustrating to play as the Americans. All your productive cities are too far from the action.

Haven't tried the others.
