Why not just gather this info when users register. As part of the registration process, everyone has to answer a couple of polls, and maybe write an introductory sentence that gets posted in a "New User" thread somewhere. It would also be a great way to compile basic marketing data that could attract advertisers to help support the site.

Yes... most of which are posted by a tiny fraction of the site's total members.

To attract the greatest number of members (not posts) to the thread, it should be left in a Civ-related forum. After all, the newcomers who arrive at this site are typically looking for something Civ-related (hence "Civ-Fanatics")... they're not searching for a subforum to debate (spam ) about other random stuff. You can find those subforums on almost any site, regardless of the main content.
