Which Leaders are best to be friends with?

I agree Hannibal has to be treated more cautiously but he never backstabbed me. Ghengis I have used as an attack dog before and given enough time I think your somewhat safe with him, providing you don't get the close border message.

I have Shaka in my current game. He is Budhist along with Ghandi. Shaka declared war to me. Not a surprise. For some mysterious reason I managed Ghandi to declare war on me too... Because of that Shaka was on a +4 relationship with Ghandi. After I whiped out some of their attackforces I made peace with both. 20 turns later Shaka declared war to Ghandi out of the blue. So i guess he isn't quite someone to trust...

You've got to remember that there are a few "hidden" relationship bonuses that don't get shown (or accounted for in the +X value). Specifically, Gandhi and Shaka are going to get a lot of minuses with each other (Pacifist vs Warmonger). So even if you see them as having good relations, chances are, they don't.

My experience with Hatty is that she's easy to befriend and she seems to be fairly loyal, even if you have a different state religion. I can never seem to get her to go to war with someone else, though.

Hatsy is indeed the best (most of the time). Unlike Mansa, she doesn't tech as fast so she's usually not as much as a potential threat, and she is less demanding. The only problem is when her start location being too close. I have a habit of killing any creative leaders too close since they tend to grab my needed resources.
