thats the biggest waste of a curriculum EVER! Just like the UN, where they sit around making resolutions against Israel, North korea, and other nations and not ever criticizing US, UK, PRC, France, Russia when they deserve it.

as well, they are against rape, yet their peacekeepers are large perps.

I support the ideals of the UN, their declaration of human rights, and peacekeepers, as well as many other things. HOWEVER, the system is so flawed it isnt funny.

But MUN isn't necessarily just for rich schools; I can assure you that mine is far from "rich".

It can't be any worse than Boys State in productivity. All it does is reinforce the stereotype and teach people that if they are superficial and underhanded, they can gain office. They forgot about the whole issues thing, as well as encouraging intelligent debate and how to actually do something as a politician. We get enough of what they taught on C-SPAN.

Oh, it definitely can. I was one of the more persuasive speakers at the convention I went to, and managed to get, as the delegate from Iraq of all places, to ram through my own things into the resolutions. But it was such a horrid system to work with; it was unbelievable. I had a lot of fun, but I could see why the UN is so ineffective: essentially you have to get every nation to agree on everything in the resolution, and that means everything that might be effective is cut out, because, lo and behold, the nations you want to condemn are present as well.

Try getting people to agree on stopping Darfur when Sudan is in the room.

That is all anyone would talk about, and that was only the second half of the week.

Ever tried campaigning for office on the basis a platform (of any kind) with a bunch of 17 year olds? The man who made monopoly jokes became CFO, over the kid who read the Economist and did people's taxes all the time. They called it the State's elite group of intellectuals.

I beg to differ.

Just another thing that freaks me out about what I've heard about the American education system so far...

I would argue though that the UN isn't quite as bad, it simply serves a wholly different purpose than one might think. I think of it as of a toned-down modern-day version of the Pope in the Papacy's less lucky days. Naturally it can't do much against great powers, but sure can excommunicate the lesser uppity states, which is generally good, as these tend to be more dangerous to themselves and those around them.

Often, the classes are paired with US AP or World Hist. AP, I think.

I mean, up here Dance classes and athlete schools are streching the limits, and foreign languages are shuffled around (every school has spanish and french, then each one has its own 3/4th languages - one in an asian area has Japanese and mandarin, one has German, one has Farsi and Italian, and so on. People transfer high schools to get a good language school, if they speak it and want an easy credit, or things like that.) If Ontario had enough education money to waste on MUN classes, it would be great!

theres always one or two big ones who get recognition, but 75% of student activists support
a) PETA
b) Marijuana
c) a combination of the two

Well, I've spent a month in Vancouver, so I've seen a huge amount of pro-marijuana sentiment. Personally, I think things should stay as they are. If marijuana is legalized, corporations will move in, all of the grow-ops will go out of business. Then, they'll fill it with chemicals, and marijuana will be just as bad as tobacco is today.

I don't do drugs, keep in mind.

Not really. If you get high every day several times your short term memory will probably get fried though. Like all things in life, moderation is the key.

Marijuana doesn't have additives in it like cigarettes do. Natural marijuana has a greater effect than natural tobacco, but tobacco today is, as I said, a solid stew of chemicals.

Wikipedia saves the day. It did imply that smoking marijuana causes about 4-5 times worse damage to your lungs than tobacco. That cant be good, can it?

Nah....Marijuana's harmless. I've been using it every other day for the past 2 weeks.....speaking of which my stash is almost finished..... no ill effects at all. Way better than tobacco or alcohol less dangerous too.
