While We Wait: Part 3

Anyone know why Thor is posting up the rulebook of some game?

I guess he is planning a running it here.

I think he broke a record for the longest ruleset. It will take people 3 days to even begin understanding what to do.

I'm simply not going to even bother with that- there comes a point where its too complicated :).

I think there's a backlash against detail, too.

I'd gotten two and even three PM orders during TNESI. If they were readable, coherent, and well thought out, as they usually were, and not rambling piles of garbage, I'd take the effort made writing them into account.

Insane_Panda's excellent organizational structure in his orders led the Byzantines to repeated victory, despite some spirited Austrian attacks. LittleBoots also had some good ones, as I remember.

Not sure. In the supposedly simple bygone days of NESing, I recall reading very long rulesets; not sure if they were this long, but they could compete in sheer detail. Like SKILORD's earlier NESes, for instance.

The 'game' is called Survivor: Rebirth of Civilization. ;) :D I have been working on these rules off and on for a couple of years now. I made them for folks who wanted more detail and reality in their games and are tired of the same watered down rules set. ;)

It may seem complicated but the actual mechanics are quite easy for the players only the options open to the player makes it seem complicated. Now as for me, the GM, thats a different story. :D And the timeline is two pages by itself. :)

The apparent length is extremely deceptive anyway, as large parts of it are technologies/advances or lists.

I think its still to long. Most people myself included aren't going to want to read all of that just to know if we want to join the game. Maybe he should have a half page bit just as an advertisement. That way you can decide if it is something your interested in before reading through all of it.

It's good to see "tl;dr" being advertised so freely. The trick is just to store discrete elements inside spoilers so people don't freak out.

Sorry I don't understand your comment.

The reason I posted the entire ruleset is because I have seen other Fora games, and CFC is by no means alone in this form of game, that just teased you with tidbits to join then smacked you with a set of rules you did not like. I prefer being up front with my players so I post everything and let them decide on their own whether they wish to participate or not. :) No deceptions, just a desire to be upfront and honest about what is included.

As Symphony D pointed out most of the length is due to the technologies sections. Add to that a detailed timeline of two posts by itself and you can see that the length is not really that long. ;) :D

After having read the backstory, the statistics explanations, and a few of the status listings, I can say it's really not that long. The introduction and backstory takes up about 10% of the overall length, advances take up about 50%, and the listings under things like Resources of Animals take up about another 25 to 30%. So, somewhere between 85 and 90% of it is lists.

It's not long. Anyone who says that is just lazy. The meat of it is in the second and third posts.

The main thing that people here probably should be citing as their main reason for dislike is it's very RPG-orriented (as admitted in the introduction, and I mean this term in the fashion of D&D) and fairly localized. Its closest relative in these forums is probably the abortive superhero NESes, though it puts much more emphasis on orders than those because, again, as the introduction specifies, it's an RPG about being a leader.

So, it's not within the same vein as almost any game here. That's not a bad thing, but it might limit players. If anybody should be making critiques, it should be in that area, not "Wah, it's longer than a Dachspmg alt-hist, I don't wanna read it!"

Thorgrimm, just as a thought, you might want to set up a little advertisement in the Forum Games subforum to try and draw some of them in if you find yourself wanting for players; more traditional RPGs are fairly common there, and between the two you can probably get some people who are interested.

I had already read the entire alt-history before I complained about it being to long. It still hadn't gotten to the basics of gameplay and as far as I can tell from the rest of the lists you have to read all of it to play the game or even get an idea of what to expect in the game and whats expected of you. If its anything like any RPG I have ever played then you have to spend 2-3 hours just reading stuff before you can make a character and then another 1-hour to build a character. Meaning that its just to damn long of a start up for most players. If i get done with reading all of the list in a couple of days then I might join if it isn't half as complicated as it looks.

Actually this board has a very complex and strict class system it goes something like this....Everyone else, then Charles Li....

TBH the lack of elitism on around here is why I've managed to stay around for so long.
Charles Li is now on the road upwards. sp1023 has taken his place.

why am I getting nothing at all in feedback and/or sign ups for my NES? usually, the thread gets a few post recommended that it not be used, or a furry of sign ups. so far, I have had 2 confirmed sign ups, and one question. nothing else?

please, if it is bad, or just sub-par, may I get some feedback to improve it?
I put up the Taraskids, and will put more info on them when I have time.

sp1013? I haven't seen him around. Maybe that makes me lucky? Since I'm not acquainted with him. :p

Oh, and also, I don't think I'll play. It's too RPG-style. Sorry. :(
