While We Wait: Part 3

In the realm of randomness: I'm both simultaneously proud and ashamed of this, and since we have some poets here, I feel like sharing for the general consumption.

This is what happened when I was asked to write a sonnet in a poetry class and determined far too many sonnets are wishy-washy, lovey-dovey affairs. It doesn't follow iambic pentameter very precisely, but I still think it works. It's also freaking awesome in a really bad way, if I do say so myself.

We will break you; FREEDOM IS SLAVERY.

So "Down with Big Brother," you quietly rue?

Cool poem, I don't think I've ever read 1984 poetry before.
Your assistance in identifying who to send to Joycamp has been most helpful, and will be remembered. :p

Perhaps you should stop using oldspeak and use newspeak instead; you know for that artistic flair ;) Aside from that, it was certainly... an interesting poem :p

There is no challenge in doing so, it would be incredibly annoying, and it would also be incredibly ugly. :p For someone of such fine and delicate sensibilities as yourself that is truly a shocking suggestion.

I liked it!

Blame das. :p Everything that happened in Jerusalem has a logical explanation, but only das knows it.

@das- Its been a while, but I was thinking about this recently, and I was wondering - where did all those Satanim come from? What did happen in Jerusalem? And how did they single handedly slaughter 8000 rebelling Byzantine troops? That was one of my favorite moments of NESing history - Holokauston Jerusalem.

I find "miss" to be a different question than "greatest loss," and really, I can't imagine Dachspmg ever quitting, and things would be different in small but very notable ways if was gone.
I have to say, I didn't expect that. Other than a comparative lack of inane questions relying wholly on failing to read what other people have actually said, what'd be gone? :p

As to previous loses, either Stormbringer of Capulet.
Stormbringer was definitely great to have around - he was one of those who used Google Chat somewhat, and was willing to talk fairly frequently. In some respects he seems to have been somewhat ahead of his time, too, with the shortened stats and the quasi-OOC self-destruction of the Russian state to make things more interesting. (I guess those have probably been done before him, but he's the one I remember.) As for Capulet...I should've stuck with Italy in CapNES 2 - things were just starting to get interesting. He seemed to be a fairly good mod, though there's really not much for me to go on here, and of course as Luca he managed to beat up everyone else around him, which made for a great story.

As to other losses...well, the biggest one, IP, seems to have been rectified these past few months. The subforum was definitely weird without him to be French...German...whatever the devil he is. ;)

As to the poem, I can see why Birdjag would like it - it seems to have the same sort of feel as one of his, just sort of inverted. Nice effect with the caps by the way. Bury them with their own confusion!

@Head Serf:

NPCs should still have backgrounds, even if they have reduced stats.

I like iambic rhythms.

The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn door."

Just been thinking, I enjoy NESing, but lately My orders have all been sub-par, mostly because they've been rushed last minute kind of things. Now I know the best solution would be to just write them when I have time, and then save them till they are due, So I've also started trying doing that. Unfortuantly though, I don't often check back on the forum until right before orders need to be submitted, and then I find myself with a small pile of diplomacy to deal with which causes me to need to make major rewrites and generalize large parts of my orders again. (Since I often don't have time to wait for a response.)

Anyways, I was thinking a thread where everyone says where they live and the best times to contact them, or to send PMs so they will likely be read, might be useful. I know it would do some good for me, because I am getting sick of having to deal with all this diplo the same time I submit orders and sometimes even having to guess or write contingincies based on what their response might or might not be.

Hmm. I am most easily contacted on weekday afternoons between 2:30 PM and Midnight PST, and on Weekend Afternoons.

I check every day, usually 20+ times, so not for me ;)

This has been done before somewhere...by someone...

I've been thinking of something that would immensely help all NESers, but would be a huge burden to those who compound it.

An almanac or encyclopedia (Or whatever) of all countries and their vital statistics (Such as military or literacy rate for example) over history.

And perhaps history of those countries as well.

Obviously, this would be an enormous undertaking, and would have to be constantly updated. On the other hand, for other NESers, it would save huge amounts of time that would be used in research.

I can foresee several problems.

1. People would assume that others will work on the list, and therefore not contribute.

2. The information might be outdated or would be outdated by the time we updated other information.

3. History is debatable and it might lead to bias or conflicts within the undertaking.

4. A lot of people would be pissed off if the info was suddenly gone due to an internet/computer crash.

5. Symphony D. would most likely strike down this idea. :p

Which era? 1945/1911/1986'45'45'67'34'67'23'12'45'67'34'56'768'45'4'56'34'5'6''56'53'43'6''78'53'6''7'5'56''67'45'53'6''57'365''46'53''68'3'6'''6''35''45''68'67''45'3'''6'34'6'8'4'3''7'''9'568'67'9'365'69'356''452'6'9''46'?

There have been quite a few years since time began.. its quite an undertaking...

Since you asked so nicely...

You forgot the most important flaw, which would be that it would require everyone to agree on what to measure, which in turn means that everyone would have to agree on a single rule set. Thus, any such effort is doomed outright.

Basically, history would be major events in a countries' history and any leaders it had/has. Also mention notable people and inventions. Just basic stuff.

Symph: I never said anything about ruleset, unless you mean how countries will have their vital statistics listed.

And this is not what I mean by stats. I was thinking it would look like a better World Factbook. :p

Unless you intend to convert a snapshot of many nations from different periods in history into a certain ruleset, what you are advocating is never ever going to work. Why create such a thing when, with a little research, individuals can find it[1] already on the internet? This system rewards those who have the dedication to look things up and punishes the lazy.

Unless, of course, I'm misunderstanding you.

EDIT:

[1] "It" being the information carmen seems to be looking for, which is to say, cultural information, great leaders throughout time, military capabilities throughout time, etc.
