While We Wait: Part 6

Yep, peaked right around mid-July and have been falling ever since. Check WSJ for a chart. I just pulled it up but couldn't figure out how to link it to here.

What do you guys think would be best for our country? Legalism, Confucianism, or Daoism?

Really? In NY and NJ they stayed about the same.

That would be petrol or "gasoline", not oil, though, right? Because oil prices have been dropping for ages, like Stormy said, but our petrol prices here in Australia have barely dropped at all, for various reasons.

And it would only get worse if the Labor Party passed their proposed FuelWatch Bill, which requires petrol stations to fix their prices 24 hours in advance, rather than adjusting for demand and competitor's pricing.

Oh, and I probably missed any conversation there may have been about it here, or I just forgot it if I didn't, but what do any Aussies or knowledgable foreigners think of the Rudd Government's plan to introduce mandatory internet "content filtering"? Fun, no?

Yeah the fuelwatch system was fundamentally flawed, it would of been better if it was a free market, with the fuel stations required to lodge their new prices within 30 minutes of any change or something along those lines. Xenophon's vote (an Independent who with the sole Family First senator and the Greens senator holds the balance of power) against Fuelwatch also botched any attempts to get this modified to suit better. Do not forget the power of amendments to get ones legislation better.

As for the internet content filtering I find it abysmal and have said so on several occasions. That it is being introduced by the political party in Australia that is traditionally leftist-centrist just goes to show how conservative both major political parties have become in Australia. Its probably why I vote for the Greens because at least they stand by their principles.

It is also another cogent reason why Australia really needs to get its own bill of rights, other than relying on some flawed 'freedom of information' laws!

...You vote Greens? That's a wasted vote! They never win outside the Senate, and nobody has any respect for the Senate anyway!

As to the Bill of Rights...I don't think it's that necessary. In the case of the internet content filtering, provided someone has the chutzpah and the money to do it, it'll get challenged in the High Court, and the law will be overturned. But it's not terribly likely anyone could challenge it. Which is why I'm running for parliament in 2010! Haha!

I vote for the Greens and I dont think its a wasted vote.... To continue the myth that the only two candidates that can win would be the Coalition (Liberal/National) or the Labor Candidate is simply wrong and ensures that those two parties will remain in power until the end of time.

Instead people of Australia need to wake up and look at other alternatives.

I do not believe the Fed Funds Rate has ever been at zero. You have to keep in mind also that it is a target rate, not an actual rate, the Federal Reserve does not control the actual rate banks charge each other overnight.

Theoretically of course the Fed could flood the economy with enough money to force the Funds rate down to effectively zero, although I doubt that would happen.

When you get down the near zero interest rates the much more important rates to watch are the one that Fed pays on reserves held at the Fed, currently 25 basis points bellow the Fed target rate, and the one that Fed charges banks and other institutions for loans, currently 25 basis points above the target rate.

Now, if that last rate ever goes to zero, there would be nothing stopping people from borrowing as much money as they want, besides having to pay it back of course. But then again, the target rate is bellow inflation right now, so banks can borrow and then have to pay back less than they borrowed in real terms already. How much better can it get?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Japan have a Funds Rate of 0% at one point?

Japan does not use the same system as the US Federal Reserve. In Japan the Central Bank rate is not a target rate for interbank lending but an effective rate that banks can borrow money at from the federal government.

In this situation the bank has some outstanding obligations. It is required to keep some percentage of those on hand at all times, or rather just have that certain percentage at the end of the day, hence "overnight" loans. With a zero percent rate, Japanese banks could borrow as much as they needed from the federal government to meet this reserve requirement overnight. Effectively it did the same thing as setting the reserve requirement to zero would have done.

What the Greens? The people whose economic policy would impoverish Australia and take us all the way back to the sixties [don't tell me they wouldn't resort to protectionism, because even half of what they propose would make us the least productive country in OPEC guaranteed]? The Greens do a reasonable job on voting down the more socially authoritarian aspects of Labour and the Coalition and for that I can agree with them. Economically you might as well be voting for a banana Republic they are unrealistic and quite simply foolish. When I read Green policy statements what I see is a mix of condensation southern dominated as it is, powered by a clueless middle class, mixed with what I can only describe as paternalistic contempt for the majority of the population and with just a touch of insanity. I hold a similar mix of contempt for Labour at least its no longer the Socialist-Commie-Unionist abomination that it was its just peppered with people like Conroy who happened to congratulate the Chinese internet filter and tried to stamp out industry and union based criticism of his masterwork of idiocy his firewall. So I won't be voting for this Labour government solely based on that. Labour is indistinguishable from the Coalition nowadays, there is no discernible difference, both are equally corrupt, feckless parties with no other driving mission than self perpetuating their spawn. Heck, as to the Coalition, your just voting Labour really, they are that darn similar. I have utterly no respect for any politician currently in power, except a grudging respect for the current treasurer, and the PM who have managed to step above the class warfare cripe of the Labour of old and recognize that the banks are not "the peoples" enemies, however much they used to paint it that way. Kudo's to them, shame it took a financial crisis to reach that conclusion. Fuel watch is a fiasco, but you can bet the Liberals if they were in power would have done the same thing. Short answer: The parties are universally terrible.

States and Territory politics is better... then I vote for the person not the party. But with corrupt gems like WA's government, incompetent and fiscally incompetent states like NSW's government, and with Victoria's monumental screw-ups all combined with terrible opposition you have a recipe for further stupidity. Short Answer: Vote for the person not the party, all the parties are equally useless.

At least in New Zealand I can vote for ACT.

Ah economically I dont care a great deal, you would just send your money overseas.... I was thinking more socially anyways and always do when I vote... I guess I am just a committed leftist.

But yes even with me being a Greens support I still understand and realise their economic policies need a little working on.

I recommend watching scratched DVDs instead of studying for tests and writing papers.
dudes, I'm not in school anymore (not that I did that when I was in school)

2 days is not that much.
Sez you. Was my inside joke really that out of left field, or are you just ignoring it?

In other news: Maryland sucks about as much as it did last time I was there. But, on the plus side, I saw a dude in a Deuce McAllister jersey on the Metro, which was pretty unexpectedly awesome. Mutual exchanges of whodats turned into a shouting match with Skins fans, which is always good for epic lulz.

Hey guys, Chocolate and Peanut Butter Pops cereal is delicious. Go get some right now!

In other news I love this guy

If you graduated that's great news. What's next?

In my dream I saw myself walking amongst the seven granaries of my city and all were empty. In sorrow I covered my eyes and wept only to see that my right hand was being consumed by rats which had devoured three of my fingers. So I then raised my left hand to hide my sorrow and saw four ravens perched on the fingers there. I cried out and shook the rats and ravens away. The birds flew into the sun and the rats fell to the granary floor and where there had been three there were now 3 thousands. The rats devoured the chaff that lay piled in the corners where the wind had blown it and the rats were as mice and too weak to run from my steps. And then the children came and scooped the rats into baskets and carried them home to their parents shouting with glee. And as I walked among my people and saw them taking their dinner, they sang and rejoiced at the luxuriousness of their meal as they nibbled the fleshless carcasses of the rats.

The soothsayers responded: there will be three years of low water, poor harvests and famine that will be followed by bounty, plentiful harvests and feasting.

Last night I had to help a guy climb out of his truck after he crashed into a powerline pole. I thought for sure somebody was dead, that truck looked like balled up tinfoil.
