While We Wait: Part 6

We get less international news, because the majority of the News in the world comes from within our own nation. Other news pops up very frequently if you switch between various news stations. American holidays are more important as our culture is everywhere and most nations understand the concept of a lot of our holidays. I rarely ever hear international awareness for Australian holidays.

Actually looking at international news outlets like Reuters, shows to me that the majority of news happens OUTSIDE of America. Your culture is not everywhere, what is your culture anyways 'rampant consumerism and capitalism' is not a culture Moose, its an ideology.... Big diffrence. The truth is the culture we live in is Western culture, and while America is a driving force behind it, its not the only force behind it and thus to misname it American culture discounts the contributions that the rest of the Western world give towards it. Thus this means American holidays are not more important.

And yes you would hardly hear of international awareness for Australian holidays, you would actually have to listen or look out for it first which I dont think you have done, do you think that we get told when your holidays are either?? Hahaha now tell me another one!

What's a Fanny pack? And what's a thong?

Well in Australia we call fanny pack's: bum bags and thongs 'g-strings' or 'g-bangers'

I would like to note that Lucky does not represent all Americans.

I know that North King, I was not for a second thinking that either... I know Luckymoose comes from one of the less cosmopolitan areas of the United States.

If we choose to participate in a NES run by an Australian, we would have to. ;)

Since you're the one who chose to participate in North King (an American)'s nes, then you have to learn when American holidays are. :p

Congo rebels? The stuff happening in Georgia? Serbian genocide trials? Pirates near Somalia? Global financial crisis? The list goes on.

Then how come America is the only one to celebrate Labour Day or Thanksgiving when they do? Or how come America is the only one calling it "Veterans Day"?

I rarely ever hear international awareness for Australian holidays.

I actually do hear about ANZAC Day from time to time, but I couldn't remember when it is. Or any holiday that isn't a bank holiday in the US, for that matter. EDIT: And the only reason why I know about bank holidays is because I keep on wondering why the mail never comes. Or if there's no school.

No I am actually just kind enough to realise that there are very few nesers from Australia (although we are the second biggest nation for nesing after America) and would just use normal internationally recognised date and time like anyone else dealing with things that cross national borders would do ;)

Its funny how he said that he didnt see international awareness, considering that you in the UK heard about it from time to time.

To note it is also held in 3 nations (Australia, New Zealand and Turkey) and commemorated at all Commonwealth War Memorials around the world.

The day is April 25 if you really want to know.

I last lived in the UK when I was 3. :p

Why? :p Why should we go out of our way to alter our way of dealing with things simply to suit you? *arrogant American attitude* Why can't you just go online and check what date it is? :p

Not sure about that. The UK is probably bigger, and Finland used to be as well. Canada's probably up there as well.

Afaik Australia has 4 or 5 active nesers. A few more who dont anymore. Meh I aint getting into a pissing contest over this one.

Because by saying Thanksgiving you are actually changing what you usually do, I am asking to do what you usually do and thats to put a date along the lines of August 20 2009 12:59 UTC/GMT +10 or some crap.

We also call it armistice day, and most people have heard of turkey day. :p

No is that when you act like a turkey for the day? I must admit I thought with you that was most days... haha

I never hear it called Armistice day here. And other countries do celebrate Thanksgiving, but for different reasons.

You have proven the fact that Australia is the most unfunny nation on the planet.

No I think we have just proven you dont like it when a joke is at your expense. Its alright moose, I wont do it again, wouldnt want to hurt a mate's feelings no matter how misguided some his opinions can be.

I knew Canada did, Australia and New Zealand don't so I assumed it was just North America... who else does?? I also gather that if they are celebrating for diffrent reasons that they would also celebrate on diffrent dates.

Well, here's the current NESer map, a bit out of date, and missing a few people (Sheep, for example), but still a useful reference.

If people want to get onto it, I'll happily add them.
