While We Wait: Writer's Block & Other Lame Excuses

Looking up random book titles, I think I have discovered my Sci-Fi triology:

The Dwindling Edge
The era of rapid expansion, rampant optimism, massive naivety and staggering corruption.

Luscious Destruction
The era of massive interstellar conflict, opportunistic profiteering, genocide and disillusionment.

The Fallen Game
The era of post-war privateering juxtaposed with social and economic reconstruction, and the rise of post-statist, post-scarcity, pan-sentient societies.

I've always wondered what it would be like if a book took place during the fall of an Empire in space opera/sci-fi setting as the Empire split apart and different groups started destroying each other for control. Are there any like that that would meet that criteria?

Dune gets pretty bleh around the fourth book.

Emperor of the fading suns; a roleplaying game and video game. The background is really well developed and super fun. Some loser tried to combine it with fall from heaven to run a NES -its around here somewhere. But yeah, space feudalism- awesome setting for a book, an RPG, a video game, or best of all, a NES.

EDIT:

Psychic powers in an SF setting disturb me almost as much as attempts to combine it with cowboys and the wild west.

Actually i agree with that now (though not when i was younger). Just leave it out.

I once read through a particularly terrible Kevin J. Anderson serial which started out okay and kind of interesting, but then went absolutely crazy with like nature, fire and water elementals in space and psychic telepathy and other shenanigans.

Elaborate? :run:

Sorry Thomas, i can't do that.
I WILL run them one day (Sequel to Emperor of Fading Heavens -or whatever it was i called it)

They are only about 2 months old also- which means that i've been thinking about this - ruminating slowly.

EDIT: I am willing to TALK to you about them though... and plumb you for ideas.

Yeah- thats one thing i would be interested in, whats an interesting planet idea....? (I think symph made a good point about monobiome planets being boring) Should be physically and ecologically plausible and have something interesting and otherworldly to it. Should also be earth-like (breathable- or almost breathable environment, certain areas should be habitable without too great of technological support, etc)
