I use the term whipping this way

"You whip 2 pop for a granary" means you start building a granary and use the poprush arrow button to finish the building at the cost of 2 population points.
It requires being under slavery civic which in turn requires bronze working tech (and a revolt after the change in the civic screen).

With the caveat that the bugs he refers to have been fixed in the Warlords expansion. There, you always get what you pay for.

I hardly ever use whipping to produce things in this game - is it really that big a deal? Reading that article suggests that it is!!

didn't you notice the number of articles referring to slavery?
There is one "slavery... convince me" or something like that were you could find everything you need to at least try it.

My advice, if you still need one, is to try playing with bismarck (expansive, industrious).
You should start building granaries asap everywhere, and whip them as soon as the city is size 2 and 1 hammer at least is in.
Enjoy.
Same for the forges (though it will cost a little more, so you could need to be size 4).
With granary and forge, you're ready to abuse the whip...

Whipping is cruel, bad and brutal people murder. But it is very useful

I use it while i can because I switch to caste system so soon when its possible.
I just love these merchants who help to run tech in 90-100 precents. Even its not wery useful in MP games (Low production).
