Who Among Us

So I finished my application :)

Polity name: The Algaeists
Claim: See above.
Leader name: Lars "The Cell" Steinskog
Leader trait: Spark of Genius / Osirist - I'm not sure whether I'm allowed just to pick Genius when it's obviously better?
Society Theory: First Order: Theory of Mind. Second Order: Theory of Control. Third Order: Theory of Growth.
Government Theory: Oligarchy
Economic Theory: Resource Economy
Background:

Ten years before departure, marine biologist Lars Steinskog approached the Scandinavian government with the proposition to send an additional ship with the UN mission; one that would focus on charting and examining the vast seas of Osiris. Lars said he was intent on learning more about the nature of marine life, particularly how life came to be to begin with. Lars was no obscure scientist, infact he had procured twenty different books of which three were compilations of his research articles on jellyfish, accounting for several thousand pages. Most of his life he had traveled the world, switching between examining sealife and hosting thousands of speeches about the nature of marine life. Impressed by the sheer amount of literature produced by this one guy, Scandinavia's president signed his proposition and arranged for his custom team of scientists to travel to Osiris.

Lars did, however, live a double life. Beside his massive achievements, he hosted several private parties during his time around the globe, inviting people from the local academic elite. These were highly secure, held in secret and saw some of the strangest entertainment on earth. Through some of the best engineers in the world, Lars had arranged for his guests to join in a virtual reality as part of the same consciousness, each mind overlapping with each other. The intense experiences were of course kept secret, forced by signature, but slowly Lars managed to entrench a roster of very smart people in a cultlike academic entity called the Blob.

In the beginning the Blob was just a hobby practice, people joining the reality to experience life different, and joking about the brain wavelength sharing by calling it something silly. But in a few years the organization coalesced into a complex of thoughts and ideas, people trying to figure out how to formalize the experience - and how to make it reality. Because whether artificially made so or not, it was highly addictive to be part of the virtual reality. Some of the most prominent of the world's philosophers produced the book known as the Algae Manifesto, a secret paper only throughoutly beknownst to the Blob's elite - and the group was slowly being renamed into "The Algaeists".

The project was simple, and had to do with Lars' own ideas. His fascination of jellyfish was much more severe than most people gave it credit for. He considered separated life "impure" in a way, artificially separated, at least separated in human consciousness. He held that surface life was but an extension of the living breathing sea, and that we should all return and become part of it. The Algae Manifesto formalized these ideas into an appeal to some primordial state of divinity, where people, like algae, truly lived in an interconnected state without individual thought, but being fully aware of their state, contrary to real algae... and jellyfish.

So, Lars prepared a forged document covering up the intentions of thousands of scientists, presented it to the Scandinavian parliament, who presented it to the UN. And he was given a colonial charter, as well as thousands of crewmen who had no idea what was going to happen to them.

Four hundred years later, they crashed on Osiris. Immediately, Lars organized the bioengineering technocracy, created a strict police sector, made reading (the public parts of) the Manifesto mandatory to the whole state, initiated a large scale marine study, intending to extend humans - literally - into the Osirian sea.

The jelly: Algaeist synonym for brain. Also the name of the Algaeist parliament.
Stinger: a policeman or soldier.
Tentacle: an engineer.
The Cell: The current head of the Algaeist parliament.

Hope everyone enjoys it. I'm exhausted from literally moving all my stuff from one house to another constantly since Tuesday morning. And I'm not even done yet.

Oh and aesthetics are PIRATES! I forgot that part.

Edit also political opponents and criminals are given "sleep therapy", where they are buried alive for a set amount of time and dropped water and food through a pipe - they can't move much however, they are lying down. If they are punished for more than a week they are rotated between their cells and a room in complete darkness while their cells are cleaned.

It's been a while and I'm really sorry for that! However, it's not as if no progress has been made all this time. Currently, the stats are all done. For the very most part, anyways. It's postable.

I just have to now work on writing up the words of the update, a duty which has escaped me this weekend. I'll be working on it throughout this week. We'll get it this time for sure!

Or I'll go play some Sudoku. You know, which ever one.

Update 0: Planetfall

Before this vantage, atop a lushly-covered hill, overlooked a clearing where a various fauna grazed. It was a normal day under the red-tinted horizon. The wind blew gently, complementing the sound of a nearby creek.

Then, a roar.

Louder and louder it grew. A spot on the sky expanded with each passing moment. Various creatures looked up. Some began running.

Then, a cloud.

The clearing was covered in a dense fog. The roar was deafening. The cries of the native life couldn’t compete.

Then, a clank. Then, silence.

We had arrived.

December 5th, 2348

At least, that’s what I think today is. There’s a rumor that the big shots up above are planning on designing a new calendar, since it’s kind of hard to pinpoint how much time had actually passed since we left Earth. Especially with relativity and all that? And they say that our calendar just doesn’t match up with the orbit of the planet and its own rotation.

But I dunno. We don’t have much from back home. Sure, it hasn’t felt all that long, but I already miss my home. This is gonna take enough getting used to as is. Can’t we at least keep a calendar? Like, we know where we’re from, right?

Anyways, it’s been a little over a week since planetfall. Everything is going smoothly. The colony ship unpacked more or less how it was supposed to. The only thing is that the soil here is less hospital than we thought. We might need to start rationing soon. Some small explorational teams have gone out and surveyed some plants from here that we could use. Seems promising, but it’lll be a while before we actually see the pay-out.

Landings

The Shaolin Sect landed atop a hill overlooking a beach. The landing succeeded with no real negative implications. Preliminary studies of the ocean shows that the water is slightly more acidic than expected. Researchers caution it may be wise to commit further study before attempting to set sail on this world. [+5% Research bonus when researching Geophysics]

The Directory of New Terra, though finding a solid landing spot, experienced technological failure of the landing gears on arrival. Some facilities have been damaged, disrupting mineral extraction in the area until repairs are complete. [-10% Minerals for two turns]

Though Tin Fa Yuen experienced no complications in landing, the landing site is somewhat isolated from the mainland due to slightly incorrect survey data. Specifically, the site is something like an island, though the water separating it from the mainland is fairly shallow. This should not pose many problems long-term, but the nature of the water on this world means that early expansion may be delayed. [+1 Food required for first pop expansion]

New Home’s colony set up with no complications in a plain right beside the ocean. This is somewhat surprising, as many of the project heads assumed something would certainly go wrong. The relatively spacious plot of land combined with a lack of duties assigned due to emergency crews being unnecessary has lead to the colony’s development being ahead of schedule. [+10% minerals for two turns]

The Indian Restoration State landed without any mechanical failure, however, their landing seemed to have disturbed the nest of some native fauna. As the colony was unloading, winged creatures attacked several structures. Nobody was injured and the colony’s self-defense programs were able to fend off the creatures, but some structural damage was sustained. Engineers predict energy yields will be less than initial projections guaranteed as a result. [-5% Energy for two turns.]

The Crown faced complications in landing as the region seemed to have been inaccurately surveyed. The area is much more hilly than expected, and the planned planetfall point was several dozen meters higher than it was thought and the colony ship touched down faster than it would have normally. This has resulted in unprecedented structural damage, but very few were injured. Head engineers are split — some are afraid the operation could be compromised, while others believe it can still very much be salvaged with time and effort. [-15% Food and Energy. Project unlocked: Colonial Repair Initiative.]

Elador Enterprises landed without issue, however the situation is still rather dire. The polity’s ship landed nearby the northern ice cap — as one would expect, food is hard to come by so far up north. This wouldn’t be as big an issue, but the place also seems to be infested with an odd form of alien life. The nature of the creatures, aside from what appears to be extreme territorial aggression, is not known. They appear like rocks, but scientists cannot be sure if it’s just a shell or not without further study. Whatever the case, their effect on the colony is clear: Growth on this part of the planet will be complicated. [-25% Food, +4 Food required to grow in this zone.]

Neu-Liechtenstein successfully landed within the mountain range of the western continent’s central zone. This is an impressive feat, but not really one that gave anything in particular to the colony, good or bad. Altogether, a sound landing.[no effect]

Things are not looking very great for the New Eden Imperium. When Eden I’s landing sequence was initiated, the craft underwent partial engine failure and endured a crash landing from 100 meters. Miraculously, the craft was not destroyed beyond repair, though several facilities have been badly damaged and about a quarter of the population were injured, a fifth of them ending up as casualties. [-50% Energy, -25% Food. Project Unlocked: Colonial Repair Initiative. +3 Food Consumed for three turns.]

The Algaeists landed atop a hill on a rather unique geographical formation. In fact, the geography, few words, doesn’t make any sense. A large lake-like body is surrounded by two thin strips of land from the east and west when the planetary data suggests it should be either open water or totally land. Aside from this oddity, nothing special commenced during landing. [Quest Unlocked. View Quest log.]

The Janus Project miraculously landed on what appears to be an “oasis” in the cold tundra the small continent it landed on, along with Elador Enterprises. It is fairly vexing how this oasis came about — it is warmer and the soil richer. For now, all Janus Project members can do is make use of it, without any capabilities to make sense of it. Janus scientists urge the study of geophysics be prioritized in order to better understand this anamoly. [+4 Food required to grow in this zone. Quest Unlocked. View Quest Log.]

The Lein Imperium’s sensors seemed to have slightly malfunctioned, somewhat displacing them from their expected landing zone. This hasn’t done too much, but colonization has been somewhat delayed due to the confusion. [-5% Food, -5% Energy for 1 turn.]

GM Notes
  • The Szydłok Pact failed to turn in a background, so I decided against providing a turn one event and free starting tech as there was a lot of downtime to get it turned in. Sorry. It shouldn't put you too far behind, but I figure this course of action would be the best way to punish inactivity without being metagamey.
  • I will have building listings up and running soon for your benefit.
  • If you have any concern or question, I encourage you to ask in thread as it may help others as well. However, I won't ignore PMs or third party messages, such as discord or chatango.

That's all! You may now engage in roleplay and diplomacy.

did anyone else notice that the central region of the northeast half of the largest landmass looks kinda like afghanistan

AA we talked about this

The Directory is pleased we landed safety, though the damage conducted during landing will have be repaired to make for the lost. Thankfully with SCIENCE we will learn to overcome our starting problems.

Yeah, working on it. Shouldn't take too long when I actually get to it so expect it tomorrow. The jist of your quest, though, is to research geophysics.

I don't see it. Post it again?

Orders will be due in two weeks, Friday 9th.

Great update.

Quest log and Projects have been updated for those of you for which they are relevant.

So, four more days till lock.

The fact that I completely forgot I was in this game is why I'll quit rather than throw together something half-assed. Sorry! Hope you guys have fun with it.
