Well, the comment itself is clear enough. However, her husband felt the need to clarify her comment by saying she only meant the politics of america, not america itself.

Personally, I think most educated people could find something in the American political system to be proud of in the last 40 years. But thats just me.

if they thought status quo american politics were good they wouldn't be campaigning on "change"

Can't we keep Laura Bush?

Has there ever been a unmarried, divorced, or something president?

Yeah, Reagan was divorced, and one of the early presidents was single (we think he was teh gay)

James Buchanan was never married and shared rooms with his "best friend."

We've also had widower presidents and White House marriages.

President Buchanan was gay, according to a professor whose lectures I have attended (although wiki says he wasn't). His niece was the hostess at the White House.

But sharing rooms with a "best friend" doesn't really mean anything, considering the time period. Abraham Lincoln slept in the same bed with his male best friend in Illinois before marrying a woman, but I don't think anyone has any credible reason to believe he was gay.

Aside from that...

Thomas Jefferson, Martin van Buren, and Chester A. Arthur were married, but their wives died long before they took office.

Andrew Jackson's wife died before he took office but after he was elected; there was a huge controversy about her, as she may have married Jackson before she divorced her first husband.

John Tyler created controversy when he married a woman five years younger than his oldest daughter.

Woodrow Wilson's wife died while he was in office; he re-married while in office, and his second wife had an active role in the government when Wilson himself had a stroke.

I dont think it was a non-issue and I also think it was an incredibly stupid thing for her to say. Especially when her husband is running for president.

It is a non-issue, but it was a stupid thing to say.

It's on the same stupid level as Sen. Obama saying that flag pins are for fake patriotism. Both explained what they meant (which wasn't anything inflammatory), but they probably should have put a little more time into their phrasing first.

But then again, British obsession with the royals...

Well, good for him!

Maybe one of these decades we'll get out of the President's bedroom.

I think it was either Chester Arthur or Grover Cleveland that married a young woman in her early 20s while in the White House.

I agree. Talking faster than thinking is not a good idea. Even if you have a valid point, botching up the delivery may make the point DOA.

Story of my life man.
That's why you need me. As long as my mouth is sealed, I can spot these things.

Cleveland married Frances Folsom in the White House; she was 27 years younger than him.

That's the one I had in mind. Couldn't remember her name for the life of me.

But then again, this was back in the day when you could go up to the White House and knock on the door. Then the President would answer.

I was just talking about that recently, and I don't remember if it was here or with non-electronic friends... that we need to go back to that, but perhaps have three lines for people. Autographed photos at the gift shop, a line for people who wish to just say "screw you" or the equivalent, and a third line for people who actually want to talk policy with the president.

That way, people wouldn't have to wait in line to talk policy with the president.

Lobbyists still have to use the back entrance? That's discrimination!

Or I suppose we finally found an official use for the First Spouse.

Cindy McCain reminds me of crazy, unemployed, "love America or leave it and don't try to change it 'cause if you do you're un-American," wrap-conservatism-in-the-flag armchair Republicans like the ones at that pro-war rally.

I don't believe that Michelle Obama was never proud of her country before since nobody's stupid to purposefully say something like that. Plus she doesn't use the flag to divide us and promote policy like Cindy McCain.

I am shocked!

I am shocked!

I was surprised too, since all she said is that she's always been proud of her country. But it's her tone, and because it isn't politically advantageous for her to be rational since it's inconceivable that Michelle Obama would actually not be proud of America.

Plus, she's part of the "let the troops do their job" crowd even though WE the people employ the soldiers so we get to dictate what they do.

I know very little about both women so all I have to go on is unscientific "impressions" and a few quotes and speeches.

Actually I meant I was shocked the guy working for Obama wants his wife as first lady.

Well, Michelle Obama won't steal medication from charities, even if she baits the wingnuts with a borderline anti-nationalist statement every so often.

Oh, you know that's not what I mean. People like you that tow the party line so when Democrat X does something questionable you jump all over it whereas when Republican X does something questionable you make excuses and call the media liberal and do anything but acknowledge the imperfections of what you follow.

I dont toe the party line in this regard. Again, if McCains wife had said such a thing I would have been quite forward in saying how stupid she would be to say it.

Not I, I would not be all over it. I wouldn't care.

Just like you dont care here. Right.

I don't think it's necessary to be proud of your country. Yes, it's necessary to be very very careful of what you say when you're part of a national campaign, but personally, it doesn't bother me. If anything I'm impressed that Mrs. Obama had the balls to say something that would upset people.

I dont want my presidents wife to have testicles. Going that route got us Hillary, remember?

You say that now. If she had said something unorthodox first, you would've played the same lines you always play when your team messes up. Show us where you've done otherwise!

Well, I dont have to, but all you have to do is actually pay attention over the last couple of years I have been posting here. I have verbally disagreed with the Bush administration on many items here in the OT. Early Iraq war strategy, immigration reform, port management deal, etc. I disagreed with. When republicans do idiotic things, I dont mind saying its idiotic as well. Its just common sense.

How am I being a hypocrite?

You accuse me of something you yourself do, and have done in the past. No more, no less.

Uh...so, given the fact of what Michelle Obama did actually say, according to your premise she: (a) has no idea of WTH she is saying or (b) purposefully lying about it in order to score political points.

And where has Cindy McCain used the flag to 'divide us'? I havent heard that one yet.

Oh...and btw, if a presidents wife isnt supposed to 'promote policy' whats she supposed to do exactly?

She simply mispoke.

One thats been proud of the USA for awhile.
Since slavery? Was she proud of Nixon? Of US supported dictatorships in Latin America? Of giving weapons to Iran?

If you're blandly prideful no matter what your country does what is your pride worth?

Is it a sin to state that there are times when you are disappointed in your country? Evidently only when you're a democrat, eh?

Hmmm. Apparently Narz, you cant think of anything to be proud of?

Civil rights movement and the civil rights act? Something to be proud of?

Camp David Peace accords? Affirmative action? Aid and relief to areas hit by disasters the world over?

End of the Cold War?

Nah...nothing to be proud of at all.
