Why are we bored?

It's cold and grey outside and will be that way until June where there'll be approximately 2 minutes and 35 seconds of hot weather before it becomes cold and grey again, there are no bookstores and libraries within walking distance and it's way too cold to do anything outside!

I'm lonely more than bored. There are plenty of things to do, but fewer people to do them with.

My sentiments exactly. In college I was virtually never bored (except at 4AM during weeknights when everyone was asleep). But the "real world" is not like college. Your friends aren't right down the hall & even if they were, it wouldn't be the same.

I'll echo the lonely part (and I'm in college to boot....). There are lots of things to do, but without anyone to do them with you either can't do them, or what you can do tastes like ash.

For example, I love writing and flexing my creative muscle, but I don't have a whole lot of drive left. I'm bored because I know there is a lot more to life then reading books, playing videogames and occasionally writing something. Sure those are great things, but they fullfill needs that are easy to fill. Personal needs like companionship have and always will be there (or not be there in this case) to make us bored and unsatisfied. Of course, with things the way they are the problem is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

And, I have to agree with the sig of the poster above me. It says "Consumption alone will never satisfy your soul."

Nuff said.

Bored? Bored?! Good grief, so many things require my attention that I have no time to be bored. Work, other stuff, chores, girlfriend... no time for gaming already. Things are so bad I wish I could do the ninja self-duplication trick already.

Virtually unlimited options does not necessarily bring happiness.

Check out Paradox of Choice on Google Video.

People think unfettered freedom brings happiness but oft-times it's just the opposite (discipline & responsibility bring it better, especially in conjunction w/ bonding & solidarity).

That entire video he was assuming that correlation=causation, which is definitely not true.

I find it to be at least somewhat true.

When I was 11 years old I had only two cassette tapes (Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik & Fresh Prince & Jazzy Jeff, forget the album name) and I was happier w/ them than I am w/ a whole Internet full of music. I was also happy in my college of only 1,200 students (I imagine I would have been less happy & fewer close friends in a bigger school though this is just speculation). Same thing w/ porn. Guys who watch tons of porn are less satisfied w/ their GF's because of the vast array of styles & talents these porno girls possess. Not to say lots of people, music or porn is bad, just that w/ great abundance comes the responsibility to not let it dilute your appreciation for the small things in life.

All authors tend to generalize, oversimply & eliminate points contrary to their thesis & Schwartz is no exception but I do think there is something special about simplicity & having one's path clear & narrow before you. Like when I used to go biking in Miami late @ night & got caught out in the rain, I'd be forced to ride home. Part of my was annoyed by it it but part of me enjoyed the fact that there was no if, &'s or buts about it; I just had to ride home & there were nothing left to think about, just to enjoy it (& I always did).

I am almost never bored. If I am I usually use my imagination. It is very good and keeps me entertained where nothing else is at hand
.

We have to remember thought that having choices isnt always something to make us unhappy, on the contrary, I think if utilized it an make someone more happy otherwise.

We are bored because we live in a society that encourages Idleness and laziness, never become idle and youll never get bored, if your kids complain of being bored, get em to mow the lawns for you.

I can be bored at times, but it's a whole lot less that it used to be. I have my computer and my Wii, and also other things...

No, it's a farkin' fundamental logical fallacy.

The fact that authors do generalize doesn't meant that they should generalize, or make their point any more better.

I just couldn't understand how he came to the conclusion on many of his points.

Like the grocery thing in his speech, how does he know it simply wasn't a different group of people buying that day, or if just a small community why would somebody need the same product twice. There were just to many holes ion his argument, the most prominent though was that he assumed that all correlations were casual, which doesn't make any sense.

No but they have to. To sell books.

People want to see solid conclusions (& maybe "action steps" depending on the type of book) whether the actual evidence for said conclusions is actually solid or not.
