Why can't I order off the kids' menu?

Most American restaurants like to give you way too much food. Even if you don't want to eat three meals in one sitting, you get a stupidly oversized portion that you won't finish. Then, there's this kids menu where the portions are smaller and the meals are cheaper. A kid-sized plate of whatever is usually plenty for me, and I'd rather just get less to begin with than have to take it home. Some places will let you do this, but other places adamantly refuse to serve you off the kids menu. They cite policies that "only guests 12 and under can order off that menu". What difference does it make whether I eat it or a ten-year-old eats it? They're producing the same thing, and charging the same price. But they won't let you get it if you're grown. I can't figure it out. What is the point of this?

I've never understood it either. It seems their reason for doing so is to get a family out to eat where the kids will enjoy it and the parents will pay full-price for large dishes and (hopefully!) get a drink or two also. But there should be no reason to restrict the kids' menu to someone who wants less food to begin with.

their obviously terrified that the US will become ruled by thin people
probably just loss of money, really

You can still ask for carry out trays. Most restaurants should have them.

Is this a random rant? :hmm:

But I agree with you. Kids' portions are more eatable, and often the food is better too. I would kill a man for spaghetti hoops.

It might be that they just want you to buy more. :)

Edit: Yeah, crosspost with the last... 6 posts. :yeah:

You can always eat less. :p

My sister was always able to order off of the kids menu at restraunts... Where do you live or what restraunts did you go to?

Adults are too old for the kid's menu anyway.

Yeah, but sometimes I don't want to have to bring it home. Like I said, I'd rather just have less to begin with.

No, I really want to know why these guys insist that I buy two pounds of food! Maybe there's somebody here that owns a restaurant or something.

Most places do let you, but there are a few that are just ridiculous about it. I live in Rhode Island, but I've encountered this all over the place.

Perhaps it's because the restaurant makes a smaller profit from items on the kids' menu (because the cheaper prices - it probably doesn't correlate to the smaller amount of food), and they want you to order the more expensive items? I'm not sure, really.

Yeah but they still shouldnt dissallow it.

Im not screamed at to order lobster when i eat at a seafood place for example. :crazyeye:

My mother can order off the kids menu, but then again she looks like an 18yr old.

I have no clue why they wouldn't let you order off the kids menu. Was this a fast-food franchise or a actual sit-down waiter restaurant? (Usually you will always be able to get Kid Menu on a fast food place, but not many times at a sit down restaurant).

I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember the last time I saw a kids menu at a restaurant. :dunno:

Maybe its inferior food, and they rely on a child's untrusted palette to pay that much for it.
