I made a cake yesterday. With white wine, hazelnuts and spices and covered it with chocolade-rum icing.

Either for the taste, or the social lubricant - although taste is still important for the latter. The variety is also nice. I like to try a variety of non-alcoholic beverages as well, but alcoholic ones do expand the variety of taste significantly. Most of the time I drink these days is socially, and then usually fairly modestly. Occasionally I'll have something I like at home.
I used to drink only mixed drinks, not seeing the appeal of beer when almost all I say was light American beers. Then I went to Belgium, and learned that beers can be tasty, too. Nowadays, cider is near the top of my list, since even a mediocre one will likely taste decent. And there are some liquors that are legitimately delicious, amaretto for example. I've had absinthe in Sweden, where it was never banned. My friend and I didn't know how you were supposed to drink it at the time, and had it straight, but I found it to actually have an enjoyable taste (and much less alcohol taste than I expected). However, it's expensive, so I haven't bought it again since. It wasn't that good.
I don't drink wine very often. I cook with it occasionally, and will have some with the meal I made then. But I'm not good at finding wines I like yet, so for the most part I just don't buy any.
Initially I drank alcohol out of curiosity. I'd been attending events where considerable amounts of alcohol were consumed for more than six months before doing so. Prior to that I'd considered alcohol dangerous and something to be avoided, having grown up without contact to it. But seeing people that I knew using it, having fun, and not acting like idiots, I gradually realized that in the right crowd it could be fun without undue danger. Of course it did help that this group wasn't drinking tasteless beer like most people my age at the time, and that once I tried it I liked the taste.
