Why does Brazil have so few medals?

Looking at the latest scores:

Brazil is stacked at the bottom, together with Argentina. Economic conditions aside, what do you think is the cause for this?

Economic conditions probably have little to do with it. Canada is doing terrible as well.

Mu only explanation is that if it's not football, the Brazilians and Argies aren't interested.

My explanation.

Firstly, the Olympics don't have much prestige around. The best football players don't play on the Oplympical team, for exemple(Brazil is not even competing for male football). It's widely regarded as a dull tournment.

Second, Brazilians like group sports, and they give few medals. You have to go through a lenghty competition with various tough opponents. We are very likely to get gold medals on male and female volleyball, and male and female beach volleyball. Currently Brazil has by far the best volley teams.

The countries that get alot of medals are the ones that focus on individual sports, such as swimming or olympical gymnastics. We suck on those(with a few honourable exceptions).

PS: We just won our first gold medal today...(laser class. Robert Scheidt rules).

Brazil is one of the best teams (consistently no. 1) in Soccer. You can play that with two feet, a well-rounded orange, and any cleared road.

Lack of funds will reduce the number of sportsmen using specialist facilities, like swimmers, etc.. and even affects the number of people who practice with a tennis racket, hockey stick, or even basket ball.

Pretty much my theory for why African nations, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Brazil, Argentina... generally do worse than tiny but well-developed nations like the Netherlands etc..

Japan is also tiny but extremely well developed, and currently in 3rd place.

I wouldn't call Japan a tiny nation. It has over 127 million people. That's bigger than a lot of african nations and Argentina and afghanistan.

about brazil, were only half way though many countries have yet to find events they are good at. for instance jamaica have a few good sprinters.

I agree on this. The American Michael Phelps had already won 4 gold medals and 1 Bronze medal alone in Athens.

In swimming alone, 96 medals are distributed !

Isnt this contradicted by winning a sailing medal?

Also imo the number of medals awarded for swimmimg is ridiculous. The point surely is getting a particular distance as quickly as possible, either on land or in water. Why have extra competitions for different strokes? That makes as much sense as the backwards 100m race, or the 400m silly walk.

Exactly.
IMO the Olympics medal ranking is grossly unfair.

will agree with you...specialy that Serbia aren't good in much of individual sports It should be like: 12 medals in basketball counted or 15 (not sure about number of player all together) in Waterpolo to be fairly compared to individual sports, I think.
As for Canadians, should wait for WINTER olympic games. Will got a bunch of medals of all kind..

If you're complaining about the number of medals, just take a look at athletics. But hey, rightfully so, it's the mother of all sports (sometimes wrongfully quoted to saddam )!

Howmany countries in the world have more citizens? India, China, USA, Russia, Brasil, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan.

So Japan is the number 9 country in the world, out of 192 or so. Tiny???

There is also a sports development factor. This factor is low in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, when not regarding Hockey and Cricket, and low in Brazil when not regarding football.

Banning Italy would have been a better option, IMHO. Kantklossen is also popular in Groningen.... Not an olympic game though.
