You can't be good MP without a complete understanding and mastery of all sp play styles and strategies. Its the same dam game. You just can't get away with sloppy unprepared plans.

If you can't land a SS pre 1000ad on deity in solo play then GOOD MPers are gonna slaughter you.

Hmmmm, And I was of the poorly mistaken thinkning that I was pretty good at Civvy... ****.. I gotta get back on the net and hone my skills! You have messaging and **** on MP games? What about alliances and how long do the games usually go for...

well I am pretty new to MP but I have played in about 10 different games and they are LONG, real long. I think the farthest I've played into a game is 1000AD and that took around five hours and that was only with three other humans. Most people chat via ICQ and the multiple active lists available. Alliances are as honest as your opponets.

LOL, quite an achievement to get humans together on one task for that long, hehe. Is that "typical" for an MP game? I guess I figured MP would take a good chunk of time, given how long SP games can go. One of these days when I have enough continious time to give it a go, I'll take a good look at the MP threads and see what's up in the realm. I just glad that at least the dumb AI is available anytime I click the icon

My policy when I play is that each city has a settler/engineer to improve terrain and later, clean up pollution. Sometimes there are two to transfrom terrain and clean up mega pollution.

Remembering, that once ur settle is finished, you can use it to improve land elsewhere, clean up elsewhere and establish cities

Well, slaughtered may be a bit much but you should be able to land the large real world map,for instance,on diety 1x1 by 1000ad.
Thats the kinda speed at which good players move. You don't have to beleive it.

Going back to the original question:

I can't answer for others obviously, but the reason my HOF game (Emperor 1st) doesn't have all improvements like factories, manufacturing plants, solar power, etc, is that I usually sell them off after I build my SS. I sell off defensive improvements like city walls, barracks, ports, SDI, etc too (if I even had them to begin with) as soon as I'm the only real power left.

In late game, for a high score, I then go on a buying spree to make sure each city has a courthouse, marketplace, superhighways (good for happiness and better trade/future tech rate). The more happy--ie light blue--citizens you have, the higher your score. Shield production doesn't affect your score.

As for developing the land, I don't bother with mountains, or even deserts unless I have LOTS of spare settlers, which is seldom the case for me. Frankly, I've never had a city over size 35 or 36. Usually 207s to 30's, and quite a few in their teens by game finish. That particular game, I actually finished 20 turns too soon as I got bored. Guess I'm just sloppy that way.

Haven't yet played MP though. I'm very curious to see how that will improve my game overall.
