Why hasnt anyone told me about this game!

Seriously addicted to this already. I was just talking to a buddy at work about it and now he is going to buy it. lol

Admit to yourself and before God that you have this addiction...

One morning in 1991 one of my friends brought me the 10 flopy disk game and instaled on my 386 PC. At the time my knowledge of English was, kind a lame, so I had to figure out the game by playing. Still it was perfect. I just got one of my friends addicted. Perfect game.

BTW I do not agree that every game Sid did was perfect (remember Getisburg).

Some people really liked that i thought. In the press in the Uk it got pretty panned. They said you had to be an American or have a degree on the civil war in order to get it.

I do not want to diminish the value of the battle, but the game it self had some problems. The possitioning of artilery was disaster (you put them on the top of the hil and for some reason they do not want to shoot), and basicaly as soon as you flank enemy with one unit you win the battle. BOOORING. I got the game at the same time I was playing Panzer General II (even Panzer General 3d), Sim City 3000, Civ II and Heroes III which were muuuuuch better games at the time.

Pirates (2004) would contribute to that positive stereotype if not for one thing: mega-crashing

Bought it for $10 at Wal-Mart (yeah, yeah, I know) and installed it, started playing...

Every time I saw a Dutch Fluyt it crashed to desktop and I had to reload it. Sometimes it would just crash in the middle of the ocean with no ships, too. :(

I reinstalled it on my new comp, Vista, and guess what, the installation setup crashed halfway through. Twice :goodjob:

Not even patching will fix that.

This has to be the best strategy game I have ever played!

This has to be the best game ever to be played, period!

Except, of course for other civ versions. Civilization has already 20 years of developing as a game since the original CIV. Can´t imagine how you managed to notice it just now.

--A seasoned (but not very good) player, I should have known better, but last night, it happened again. 9 o'clock, I was going to stop and do some reading... just one more turn, well that was quick maybe one more... one hour and many more turns later I hadn't got any reading done, but I did teach Mansa Musa some manners.

Love it :goodjob:

Yes!!

Gay being used as a term comparable to homosexuality barely predates the term being used as a general derogatory term towards something undesirable, if at all. When used in the context of something in gaming or where there are clearly no people involved, it is a little biased/silly to immediate assume on interpretation of the word against others, especially one that doesn't make sense in that context.

However the above joke is not an example of what I'm describing, and probably in bad taste in general especially on the family-friendly sides of the forum ;).

Also, heroes of might and magic was/is a great series comparable to civ for a different type of game play. It's simpler but much more streamlined for balance/far less buggy in general (comparing bugs at release time). V had a nasty campaign bug in one of the 2nd campaign missions though that just gave the AI WAY too many elven units.

Well, just make sure your "buddy" is above board. That's how they get through the door. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6328986021541085902&ei=J--ESsi3GJHUqwKon6GBCA&q=boys+beware

Denny's mother had great legs.

What does "cottaging" mean when one isn't playing Civ?

Oops! I only noticed Padma's admonition now. But honestly, I'd be interested to know, English not being my mother tongue. No doubt it can be told in bowdlerized language.

Back to the topic: Welcome! :) I've been hooked since the original game. I only bought it because the one I meant to buy wasn't in stock. The rest is history. I still remember whispering to myself at four o'clock in the morning: "Just one more turn..." And then it was suddenly six o'clock.

be prepared to play hours on end and not realize it.

it's helpful to put the clock on the screen.
unless you want to spend hours dominating little worlds and sending axemen to blindly die for you...

it's a lot of fun. well worth the cost for the entertainment.

*Sigh* I miss Heroes III. One of the best ever. Now there's a franchise that was run into the ground by horrific sequels. Kudos to the Civ Series for continuing to significantly improve on their product each and every time (as far as I'm concerned, Test of Time NEVER HAPPENED!!!).

I got this game about 3-4 weeks ago and have been hooked since. I played Civ II and Civ III though so I knew about it.

I got Civ IV, Warlords, and Bts off Ebay in one package for $13 plus 5 for shipping. (It was the gold edition). I also noticed it was less laggy then my Civ III game for some reason.

However, I do have to say when it comes to scenarios and editors, Civ II still beats the other two. I still remember some of those classic scenarios such as Mars, Midgard, Civil War, Napoleon, Jules Verne scenario, Atlantis, and who could forget the Dinosaur one. Also the event editor was amazing and so user friendly.

The WW2 Civ II scenario was fantastic. I have great memories of armies of partisans splitting out of conquered cities...
