OK so I am playing as England and am at turn 300 or so.
I have noticed that my gold fluctuates wildly between turns, and just now has gone from +35 to +6 in one turn.
The only thing I am lazy at is having my workers on automated.
Is this what is causing it?
Any help would be great as I'm baffled as to why it's happening.

Thanks in advance..

You or the governor is probably reassigning worked city tiles. Switching a few citizens from an incense or silk plantation to work cattle and hill mines for production can drastically change your gold per turn. A golden age might have ended also.

I had no Golden Age when it happened, but I'll take on board what you advised me.
Thank You very much.:)

So workers need to keep mining once plantations are built. I never knew that.

Once a plantation is built, you get the happiness benefit from it whether you work the tile or not. But to actually get the gold from the plantation, the tile/improvement needs to be worked.

don't automate workers!!!

So you just leave him on there?
Sorry sounding stupid, I'm still fairly new to this game.

You must have a citizen working the tile. There's a difference between citizens and workers. Workers build your improvements. They are the guys you move around. Citizens are your population. So if a city has a population of 4, then it has 4 citizens. These citizens can work 4 tiles, and you get the production, gold and food that correspond to those 4 tiles. So to get the gold from a plantation, one of those citizens has to be working the plantation tile. :)

I see, so in theory the Governor will send them to work it.
Thanks

In the city screen, click on the button that says something like "allocate citizens", and you will be able to see which tiles your citizens are assigned to, and you'll be able to change them.

Did you conquer any cities?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think after conquering a city, you still have to pay maintenance for buildings even if the city itself isn't providing any science or gold. At least my GPT always goes down temporarily after conquering cities.

No, conquered no Cities, was going for a Diplo win.

A lot of times the AI will decide that it needs more production, and it'll task a worker or four to build (say) sawmills where you had trading posts.

You'll lose the trading post income immediately, then only get the sawmill production when it finishes building.

Basically, what these guys said - automating workers is bad, and depending on the city governor w/o inspecting what it's doing is also risky. Micro manage, it's actually pretty fun!

Edit: also, watch out for "accidentally" hitting the automate-worker button, I did that once and didn't notice until that one little bugger started tearing down stuff I really needed. Embarrassing, but it happens if you're playing late-night whilst sipping scotch. :)

I sometimes automate workers if I am doing domination and I cant be bothered to micro manage the new cities.

Remember to tick on the "Automated workers leave old improvements" in options and you wont have to worry about them replacing things in your 'main' cities (or if you accidentially automate one ;)).

Your gonna need a lot more than 35 gpt at turn 300 to win a diplomatic victory, otrherwise who ever has the most gold will buy all the allies they can get

It could be different reasons :

One reason could be your automated workers sometimes build routs all over the place... And if you dont put out the workers dont replace old improvements in the options they sometimes destroy important improvements like plantation mines and so on....
Best to command your workers your self AI is terrible at this

Secondly you could have just finished a lot of buildings that cost a lot of maintanance for example 4 cities that are building temples and 3 that are building baracks + maintanance

You could have been at war and have a lot of units in enemy borders + maintanance

Have more military units in general cities are finished production of the units + mantanance

Or your citicens are working other tiles and dont working the gold mine or plantation that are giving you a lot of gold ..

I had this a lot in games that my cities suddenly where ready to produce my units and my money went down
