Why no Lithuanians as a civ?

Was wondering why Lithuanians are not a civ in PTW - it has Scandinavians after all, and Sweden has never been as big of an empire as Lithuania. Lithuania-Poland union was the largest country in Europe for around 2 centuries in XVI & XVII centuries. Also, Vilnius has the oldest university in central/eastern/northern Europe. So not fair :(.

The Lithuanians aren't a civ as Firaxis decided that they wanted a different civ. Civs aren't chosen on how much land they control, but on what impact they have had on history. If land were a factor, then Canada would be a civ. Also, one really old university hardly justifies a spot in this game. And besides, you can always just mod your game.

it like haveing Romania as civ it don't happen for now!

Poland-Lithuania ought to be a civ. I agree to this.

If another Civ were added, then an existing Civ would have to be taken away, and the present ones were/are more influential than Poland/Lithunaia in myopinion, so its no biggie ;)

I think this would be a great idea. We'd have a UU Sea King helicopter.... a 1 in 3 chance of it crashing everytime you used it..

Actually more like a 2 in 3 chance.

Couldn't they alter the game in a future expansion pack to allow more than 31 civs? After all, they designed the bloody thing in the first place.

I think we have enough European civs, but if they were adding more, either Poland or Lithuania would get my vote. Even within Europe, Eastern Europe is under-represented right now. And Lithuania was a large and influential nation in medieval times.

The only way to add every nation that anyone thinks should be in the game would be to make an AI for every nation, in which case they'd have to change the name away from Civilization, because it wouldn't be about civilizations anymore. Instead, they provide us with an increasingly wonderful editor so you may pursue the personal compromise of modding.

First off, Scandinavia is not just Sweden, but also Norway, Denmark, and Finland. That area has had a large impact on world civilization, most notably as the Vikings. This game focuses on the major civilizations that have had a notable influence on world history, and you can't make a separate civilization for each group of people with their own culture. As a person of Polish ancestry, I have to say that as much as I respect the Polish people, their nation has been repeatedly conquered and oppressed throughout the ages. Being stuck between Germany and Russia haven't done any favors for Poland or Lithuania. This is what makes those two civilizations - Russia and Germany - worthy of being included and Poland and Lithuania not worthy. Those nations were the conquerers, while the latter were the victims.

Iroqois??? Zulu??? How can you justify having them over Lithuania.

...because Injins are cool:goodjob:

once an Indian came into my school. He did this dance.

Which was good but..... he wasn't wearing any trousers:eek:

Just these huge boots.... and he was kind of fat and bent over a few times to pick stuff up:eek:

Heh.

And the Zulus.... are African. They need to be there so the civs represent the whole world and civs all over the world rather than just European civs and America.

EDIT: Oh and I agree that putting Lithuania in would be going too far. Let's not go crazy here.... they can't put EVERYONE in. So no Andora or Monaco or Vatican City:eek: .

No Finland is not part of Scandinavia, only Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Actually, that depends on your point of view. Some consider Finland to be part of Scandinavia and others don't. If you think of Scandinavia as the peninsula, then Denmark isn't part of it either and by this definition Finland would also be excluded leaving only Sweden and Norway. However, when thinking about scandinavia in any other way I can't quickly come up with any reason why Denmark would be part of it and Finland wouldn't.

While the Vikings originally came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, they had a rather wide reaching effect on the world at the time they lived in it. Take a look at the names of the cities founded by the Scandanavian civ. It will give you some idea of the impact they had on the whole of northern europe. Their raids were feared throughout northern Europe. The "vikings" settled permanent cites as far away as Iceland, and were the first peoples to find, and live in the New World...a full 500 years before anyone else made it there. If it weren't for the indiginous peoples of what is now Newfoundland, Canada might also be decendant from a scandanavian nation. There were Viking states in Ireland, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, France, Turkey, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Russia and the Ukrane.

Now, while many other peoples have had wide reaching effects on the world, I think the point was alread made that not everyone can be included. Civs were chosen (I think anyway) not only on their "historical" merits, but also on how well known/ popular they are in a global sense. While this is purely an anecdotal example, in my history classes (in the dim, dark past:) ), I was taught something about most of the civs in the game, but no one that I had to read about was left out...popularity does have its advantages I suppose
