It's 2018 now, so it's the ideal time to look back at some of the weird happenings of 2017. In this thread particularly I want to discuss the "It's okay to be white!"-meme and its cultural impact on the United States.

For those who don't know, the website that shall not be named had organized a trolling campaign, in which instigators spread posters on college campuses and some other places. They all read, as the thread title suggests, "It's okay to be white", black letters on white paper.

As one would expect, this got some media attention, and because it got media attention, more people began to take part in the trolling campaign, and suddenly you couldn't go anywhere without seeing fliers that declared "It's okay to be white" - okay, that's obviously an exaggeration. But it was a pretty big thing in the media, all things considered. Reactions ranged from being "literally triggered right now", to people using it as proof that "white supremacy is alive and well in the USA", to people wondering why that's even a big deal, because "of course it's okay to be white".

And that's really the interesting thing. This meme, or trolling campaign, only works because there were "triggered little snowflakes" who read the fliers, lacked the cognitive ability to realize that it is a deliberate attempt to make them act like "triggered little snowflakes". amd they acted like "triggered little snowflakes". This whole campaign is purely based on the knowledge that there are people who want to be offended by something, who want this to be a bigger thing than it is, who want it to be a sign of white supremacy. There is some beauty in the artful way in which the website that shall not be named has managed to make people disagree with a statement that only affirms the humanity of white people, in many cases even going as far as to call it a "hate crime".

Purely by knowing the subtext that other people would interpret into that statement, the website that shall not be named has managed to play so many people, people who made themselves look like fools. There is something to be learned here I think, because there is an easy way to respond to these posters, an easy way that completely defuses the statement, which is something along the lines of the reaction I already mentioned above...

"Of course it is okay to be white."

The whole meme would have gone up in flames, people would have looked like rational actors, and maybe it would even have been a small positive contribution to American race relations. Instead, "triggered little snowflakes" have not only created tons of material for the website that shall not be named to laugh about, no they've also helped the actual White Supremacists, because that question that Tucker Carlson asked somewhere in all of this - "What’s the correct position? That it is not okay to be white?" - is surely a question that many white people who were not part in any of this, people who do not understand the underlying layers of trolling that made people get upset by that statement, have also asked themselves.

Oh. OK.

What's next?

"Of course it is okay to be able-bodied/heterosexual/wealthy/educated"?

The implied question of "Is it OK to be white?" reminds me of "When did you stop beating your wife?"

If you use the very modern and niche definition of "white", i.e. "evil person [who happens to have pale skin]", then you could argue that actually it isn't okay to be white.

But no normal person uses "white" in that way, so yes it's actually fine to be white. Apart from the skin cancer thing, but that's more of a drawback than an actual moral failing.

I think it's useful to see it as a continuation of the 'milk' or 'OK sign' campaigns, the idea being to make perfectly innocuous things symbols of 'white supremacy' (whatever that means), thus discrediting the whole idea.

Personally, I think it's great. It either, as you say, shows the ridiculousness of 'triggered little snowflakes', or it forces anti-white bigots to openly take the contrary position, that it is NOT okay to be white. And of course the snowflakes and anti-white bigots missed the opportunity to shut up, just as expected.

Meh, when Americans talk about "White People" they usually mean white Americans, so it really doesn't concern me.

Are you including Canadians in that?

Nice try. :D

I assume when Canadians talk about White People they usually mean Canadians, and sometimes Canadians and Americans because of cultural overlap.

Saying the signs are inappropriate isn't the same thing as saying the statement on the signs is wrong. It's a pretty major logic fail to think otherwise, and the clue as such should be the fact that Tucker Carlson made the point

It's funny to me, too, that the "snowflakes" here aren't somehow the people who are so butthurt by people criticizing white supremacy that they organized a trolling campaign in response. And a stupid one at that, which of course does not make the point that everyone wants to rush out to make. Because, you know, it has a huge logical flaw. No no, totally, those are the people who are righteous

What's inappropriate about them?

> Talks about logical flaws
> Makes no attempt to discover the motivation of the people behind it and instead inserts his own

Heh.

People troll because they enjoy trolling, there's nothing "righteous" about them.

Their campaign clearly did what it was designed to do though, which was to create a specific reaction.

That "logical flaw" you're talking about is not actually a "logical flaw" in anyone's mind, it's the tool with which people were manipulated. Clearly, for the people who saw the signs, it meant mostly one thing ("Why are these signs here? Is that a message by white supremacists?"), but for your normal guy it is just the statement as it is written, to which activists react negatively. The very idea of the trolling campaign is that the activists and social justice advocates would react only to the thing that they interpret into the statement, and would therefor look like they advocate against the statement to the normal people who are not part of that sort of activism / culture war and therefor don't understand the reaction of the activists. It is exactly that inability of people to realize how they would come across to people who are not in their circles that turned it into a pretty beautiful, successful trolling campaign.

Given the massive shame tactics SJWs pass out in recent years, I thought it was a legit campaign to counter the whiny SJWs.

Where did I put that thinking emoji.

Apparently it's chic to be filled with self-loathing and hate your ancestry.

Who knew that the Ku Klux Klan while flawed and confused about who to hate, fundamentally had the right idea, just the wrong race to mock and incite violence against?

I'm disgusted by legitimized bigotry. I'm perplexed as well as the whole point was to vanquish this inane concept of race, and execute it, and bury it six feet deep. Instead race theory returns but aimed at "whites".

Pray tell, "Who in freakin' tarnation is white?"

I really want to know because the whole idea is that race theory is entirely bogus, of zero scientific merit, and a dubious method of validating hatred.

Whiteness is about occupying positions of power and privilege, within systemic structures of power and privilege, whilst having white skin (but not any other skin tone). Oh and also not occupying any of these positions, but by virtue of your white skin reaping all the benefits anyway (somehow).

(cue responses about how no-one actually has white skin)

They had to find someplace to blame and shame and they chose a group of people who has a lot of privilege. <sarcasm>Reverse Racism at its finest </sarcasm>. Who knows what the next flavor of the month for the blame-shame game.

Pray tell, "Who in freakin' tarnation is white?"
The guy that never saw daylight in his life?

So some people, by virtue of skin color, one gathers all albinos regardless of ethnic origin, deserve to be pilloried regardless of their personal beliefs and history, or even achievements fighting bigotry.

I am not impressed by mindless groupthink cough mob think cough for the sake of outrageous political correctness.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Yeah, fascism comes back with a vengeance.

Bend the knee to the new god of the SJW. Stop thinking critically and accept right think. Scratch that...LEFT think.

Hint, based upon DNA analysis, no one...NO ONE is white. In fact a large portion in lilly white Alabama have African ancestry regardless of skin color.

This is too rich. I know. Let's adopt the lunatic idea of apartheid but for whiteness. If even a possessing a tenth "white" ancestry...you are magically considered "white". That way you know who is to be vilified...automatically.

It's great to know who to hate versus deciding by critical thinking, right? It saves you time and money and allows you simplistic knee jerk lockstep reflex action.

PC or Alt-Right.

Whether they are PC or Alt-Right. Actually the Politically Correct and the Alt Right have very similar though processes(I.E. Having an idea of how things should be and everyone must subscribe to THEIR way of thinking and doing things or be destroyed)
Human Stupidity has no limits......

I really do not know what at right means as it is a very recent phenomena. I do know that Richard Spencer is disavowed from the alt right. If that is what you are actually referring to.

No one speaks for the alt right to my knowledge so it is a loose collection of people with different motives and so by definition is half baked at the moment.

The Tea Party was similarly a loose collection with a wide range of Libertarians, disgruntled former Democrats and Republicans, Constitutional Republic supporters, free thinkers, John Birchers etc.

A society that claims the First Amendment allows skinheads and black lives matter no matter how repulsive.
