Will Civ 5 have a 64-bit client?

We are looking in to releasing a 64-bit version of the executable, but it won't be available at release.

Is there any chance that CIV 6 will have 64-bit native version? Is a decent multiplayer mode going to be implemented in CIV 7 ?

No 64 bit version at release, not all MP modi at release, the demo not before the release...i do not want to say anything, but...

... but we're gonna have a bugged, unfinished game at release, yes :)

This is the standard of PC games nowadays, no wonder PC-gaming is dying.

No MP at release? That's crap. :(

I know...isn't it nice to see a game developer committed to finishing the core game for release before losing focus and working on all the (important but non-critical) extras. :)

Not really what i intended to say, but nice twist :D.

You're saying what i'm thinking.

Sorry, corrected it.
Not all MP modi at release, that's correct.

With 32-bit theres a total of 4GB addressable memory. That includes graphics card and what have you. That is why you hear some people saying that you only really get 3GB of memory. The graphics card eats up part of the addressable memory.

Limit for 64-bit:
2^64 = 18.446.744.073.709.551.616
18.446.744.073.709.551.616 / (1.024 x 1.024) = 16EB

Windows doesn't have a version that supports 16 exabytes of addressable memory, nor do I think that you could even fit that much into a computer physically at the present time.

With mods and crazy big maps, 64bit is most welcome!
This is nitpicking but current implementations of the AMD64 architecture "only" support 256 TB of virtual address space.

Hi, long-time mostly lurker. I have recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 64-bit. Does this mean I won't be able to play Civ5 at launch?? Can someone who knows more about this please explain?

64 bit windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications so you will be able to run 32-bit Civ5 just fine at launch.
When a 64-bit version of Civ5 is available it may run slightly faster and (if your computer has more than 4Gb of RAM) have access to more memory.

Ah thank you. I was hoping that was true. I do have some older software that's 32-bit that won't run, thus my concern.

Now I wonder if they release the 64-bit client, I assume we'd need to reinstall it. Do you think the save game files from the 32-bit version would migrate over?

Will Civ 8 have a 128bit version?

Do you realise how much memory 128 bit is? If I'm not mistaken, it easily exceeds the total memory of the internet, if not all memory since the invention of the first computer :D

Also, I can attest to Civ hitting the 1.7 gb wall. Easy enough with 28+ civs and gigantic maps.

In my experience most problems with older 32-bit software involve dependencies on 32-bit device drivers, use of code injection (very rare) or hidden 16-bit dependencies. Any recently developed 32-bit app should work unless it includes specialized device drivers which are not available in 64-bit.

They would have to work hard and do some pretty silly things to even deliberately break save game compatibility between identical 32-bit and 64-bit codebases so I would be 99.99% sure you would be OK.

I have Win7 64bit, and 8GB ram, what would this mean for me? (The CPU illiterate)

You are good to go.

The OS will only be able to allocate 2gigs of ram to Civ V since there will be no 64 bit client.

If there was a 64 bit client, it would be able to use ALL 8 gigs if necessary.

It doesn't mean anything for you, Joebasalt. The game will run fine. It does mean that map sizes etc will need to be limited to keep the game under an arbitrary RAM limit that newer computers (I'm running 12 GB of RAM on a Windows 7 Ultimate install) exceed by 3-6x, but that's just what the game will be balanced around, it won't be a problem for you unless you were planning to make or run mods that use maps much larger than the largest size the game ships with.

It infuriates me, but only because I mod primarily for my own use, run a beastly machine and would love to be able to mod without thought given to the RAM limitations of the game. For the average user, it makes no difference at all.

No purchase at release! Well, that's no surprise, didn't intend to purchase until the somewhat less buggy version comes out. I've learned from Civ IV and other games. Wait a few months for the wrinkles to get ironed out and to save up to upgrade my computer and THEN enjoy Civ V!

I need good MP, or it's a no go.

Yes, exceeds the amount of data on the internet by quite a bit. Fooling around with numbers as huge as 2^128 can be funny. It exceeds the number of synapses in all 6.5 billion human brains by a factor of about 50'000'000'000'000 :borg:
