Now, when people breed certain pets, they single out the beautiful ones to reproduce, and the result is that the pets over the generations becomes more beautiful.
Simply because animals will probably look like their parents.
Now humans are animals, and though we don't breed humans, it's still the most beautiful ones that are most likely to find a spouse and reproduce. So slowly, wouldn't humans outbreed uglyness? Of course this would take a very long time, since many ugly people indeed do reproduce, they're just a little less likely to do it.

Have you ever walked through the boardgame section of any university eating hall? The uglies are breeding, rest assured!

The concept of beauty varies a lot between cultures and with the passage of time. It's not an easily quantifiable trait like height, strength, speed, etc. Many of today's "beautiful people" wouldn't have turned many heads 200 years ago. So, no, ugliness won't go away.

It is a matter of opinion, because some beautiful people are considered ugly to some, and some ugly people are considered beautiful to others.

There's only a limited supply of non-ugly people, and yet pretty much every member of our society is suposed to find a mate and reproduce. Therefore, a lot of people have to mate with the ugly, and a lot of the times this results in an ugly-ugly match.

Humans cover their looks with makeup, plastic surgeory, drugs, and alchohol. If anything, the species is destined to look worse with continued breeding. It will also lose intelligence with time. Monogamy may also contribute to worsening looks.

I'm with SN, and furthermore, I'd speculate that plastic surgery can better the odds of the uggos passing on their genes on top of it, and will only get more and more common. Add in that (AFAIK) people of lesser intelligence are more likely to have children, and the earth won't be inherited by the meek, but rather the dumb and the ugly ;)...

I don't believe beauty is genetically transmitted to the offspring. I know ugly parents who had beautiful children and vice versa.

Depends on what you define as 'ugly'...

I find most humans ugly.

:)

Beautiful people are more likely to marry but maybe ugly people are more likely to be sluts? Or maybe ugly people are more likely to have lots of children. Also maybe beautiful people are more likely to be murdered.

I'm pretty sure that in the 90s a study did find some universal physical standards for beauty. The only key factor that I remember is "symmetry". there were others. Google time.

One, I think your assertion is wrong; ugly people breed just as often. Heck, one of my roommates philosophies in college was to 'go ugly early' which seemed to increase his likelihood of not sleeping alone that night.

Two, the concept of beauty can change and is different in different cultures. Generally symmetry is involved, but that seems to be the only standard. The 'rich and beautiful' in Cambodia would not be considered 'hot' in America because the 'rich and beautiful' get fat there, while the poor and 'ugly' don't have enough food. In
America and Europe food is generally abundent even for the poor so being physically fit and thin is in.

And there's something wrong with not looking beautiful?

I think they made a picture of the "perfect" woman, and she turned out quite regular.

There are too many folks with low self-esteem for ugly people to die out (stop being able to get laid).
