Update 2 - 1400 BC
We begin again in
Greece where there has been an invasion of Dorian lands by
Bulgare. The Bulgares placed great comfort in the fact that the Dorians lay divided. However the Dorians saw this invasion as a combined threat and organized under one of the more powerful tribal kings in order to fight off the invasion. The Dorians were able to save themselves from conquest after several bloody battles. The Bulgares professional heavy infantry stopped any serious counter-invasion, but with the full attention of the Dorian tribes turned east, the Bulgares can do little at this point to stop the constant raids across the border. [Bulgare: -2 light infantry(L)]. Bulgare in an attempt to supplement weakening income begin capturing ships crossing through the Sea of Marmara. As a result relations have soured with all near-by neighbors and it has yielded little of value.
Mycenae constructs a large and expensive fleet which floats as one of the largest armadas on the Mediterranean, surpassed only by Minoa. As a result many nearby neighbors nobles from Minoa to Lydia fear some sort of hostile expansion. Meanwhile many nobles at home disagree with this vast expenditure on something they view as useless, demanding the conquest of Athens and a move against the Bulgares for their piracy. Still some policies such as an increase in fishing have kept the common people happy for now.
The
Minoans begin to shake off their period of relative inactivity as these years are spent with a floury of building. The Cult of the Bull spreads off of the island as Minoan culture begins to slowly leak into the Aegean, competing with the Trojans at this point. Ports and roads are built and repaired in order to kick start extra trade and house the vast Minoan navy. The Minoans built a navy to surpass the Mycenaeans. It is unsure if either built theirs in a response to the other, or if both simply wished to try and create naval dominance at the same time. Regardless Minoa began to try and dominate trade routes in the region. This caused several problems with the Mycenaeans and Phenicians, and due to the other two powers stubborn desire not to lose trade themselves little has been gained.
Anatolia experiences far fewer problems than Greece.
Lydia raises the largest army of heavy infantry in the known world. While astonishing, many generals worry there is too much emphasis on the heavy infantry who would not fair well in Anatolias hilly terrain and few city walls to take. There is also an attempt to give wealth to people to start mining, etc operations but it falls very sort as many take the money and simply run off.
Ilion on the other hand is having mixed issues. While its culture continues to grow and spread, and the nation even advances to the Late Bronze Age thanks in part of trade, the nation is somewhat in decline. With raiding from Bulgare keeping goods from the Black sea from reaching major Trojan ports, and many traders being forced to Minoan and Mycenaean ports, Troy has lost a large part of its commerce [-1 commerce].
The
Hittites continue their invasion against the Hurrians who are now increasingly growing united against them. While Hittite forays are highly successful in terms of casualties, they are done so because the generals have kept conquests limited, far below the sweeping goals of the kings who ordered the moves.
The
Fertile Crecent sees the rise of the city of Ugrait in Mitanni lands. Ugrait shares much more in common with the Canaanites with large portions of Phenician and now defunct Alashiya. Ugrait even has its own language and religion, which is why it is no surprise the city ad surrounding area broke free from Mitanni control. This has left Mitanni in a weakened state as they have lost nearly all their sea borne trade, and their land borne is insufficient due to a lack of infrastructure [-1 commerce for Mitanni]. The Mitanni also lost some local levies and their navy to this new city-state, [-1 light infantry and 1 heavy infantry levies, -1 early ships] and Ugrait has paid for Alashiyan mercenaries to protect them. Mitanni is now trying to raise an army to take back this city-state.
Babylon and
Dilmun sign a defensive agreement against Elam, which forces Elam to simply stand back and watch as Dilmun continues to take the trade which was once theirs. Dilmun successfully advances to the Late Bronze Age due not only to the work of locals, but thanks in part to diffusion from Babylon, similar to how Troy reached this era. More importantly however is the legendary travels of Rasifa. Believed to have died after being sent out over land to find the fabled land of Jemen, he returned nearly 10 years later with riches. He had successfully crossed the hot grasslands and small deserts of the peninsula. That, he said, was the easy part. The hard part was spending years in Jemen learning the language and way of life. When he felt he had gained all he could, he returned back to Dilmun. Carrying large supplies of olibanum(frankincense) Rasifa did not come back empty handed. Still the caravans after him are few and far between ,and while the trade is prosperous, it is not enough to raise commerce overall.
Back over in the
Levant Phenica is back into the fray of war. Dimaqa has decided to invade the country, which at the time appeared weak. The Dimasqan forces were able to force the Phenicans off the more inland areas and into their walled coastal cities. The Phenicians have relied themselves on Heavy Infantry, which have successfully held the cities, but they have little power outside of them due to the Dimaqan Light infantry and chariots which can easily outflank them in a field of combat. Still Phenician agriculture has survived on Alashiya, and with their cities and ports safe industry and commerce continue. Dimaqa is now asking for peace while at the same time contacting Canaan for an alliance incase peace doesnt fall in their favor. [Phenicia: -1 Chariot(P), -1 Light Infantry(M). Dimaqa: -2 Light Infantry(L)]
Along the
Nile Region Lower Egypt is pushed out of Upper Egypt as a line of weak pharaohs take the throne. Upper Egypt has not taken any action to advance into Lower Egypt, and no heavy casualties have been inflicted. Still what may have been a victory to unite the Egypts has once again soured into a defeat. As Upper Egypt rearms itself, Lower Egypt muddles.
Jemen continues to expand fairly rapidly, with Sheba falling behind. Contact with Dilmun has expanded Jemens horizons and has allowed them to start a new trade, but its currently in its infancy. Still Jemens growth has provided increased industry and commerce which may yet take fruit very soon.
All the way over in
India Katal continues a systematic expansion up the Ganges. While this has done little to cause the various tribes to band, they have grown increasingly jealous and border raids are not uncommon. Still Katal lives in relative peace compared to its neighbors and this has allowed its culture to flourish.
