I would like to know of what you guys think of the wonders of the world (any category)

would you change anything, complain about any, exalt any?

finally, if you could make a "Seven Wonders of ______" what would it be?

it can be anything, as long as its forum appropriate

Stonehenge and Colosseum should not be in the Medieval wonders catagory. Actually, come to think of it, a lot on that list has little to do with the Medieval era.

Oh, and the Christo Redeemer has no place on a wonders list.

So the Empire State Building is a wonder, but not any of the skyscrapers higher than it? :p

Here are my quick lists

Great Ancient Wonders

1. Stonehenge
2. Pyramids
3. Sphinx
4. Library of Alexandria

6. Roman Road Network

8. Court of the Lions, Alhambra, (Granada)

It's all very subjective of course. As a Canadian I've included 2 Canadian 'wonders' into the lists. The CPR was apparently the longest railway in the world when it was completed, and it was built by a country with a small population over some extremely difficult terrain).

The Alhambra has to be on any "medieval wonders" list. It's amazing.

I love the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They are the originals and the best. I know that had the Greeks known about other structures during that time or earlier others might've been included but they did write the history and coined the phrase.

There's something special about all seven. I'd love to see the other 6 rebuilt in my lifetime in the places where they used to stood.

I don't understand how the Colosseum and Hagia Sophia can be considered "medieval", let alone Stonehenge, which is older than anything on the ancient list with the possible exception of the Great Pyramid!

The Aurora is a nice idea, but it's really no more spectacular than a starry sky or indeed a cloudy one. It's just less common.

And what is so great about the Channel Tunnel?

I agree with your first statement, however the Christ Redeemer is quite a symbol of the new world (South America)

it isn't necessary the height that makes it a wonder as much as what it stands for. One reason why I think the Statue of Liberty should be a wonder over it

this is true
And what is so great about the Channel Tunnel?
I think its just the political and engineering significance it brought when it was completed. A travel by car/rail from England to Mainland Europe.
I do, however, believe the Seikan Tunnel in Japan, being longer, deeper, and built first deserves a spot over it

IMO, that looks a lot like the Mausoleum of Mausollos if you ask me, its just what it had on wikipedia IIRC

artemis_templex.jpg

that is probably a better picture (just did a quick google search)

personally, I think it looks more accurate than the other, but the detail that whoever put into it wasn't really that great. but that is just my opinion

Except there's nothing "wonderous" about it. It's just a giant statue of Jesus made of concrete. The original wonders had something special about them, this is just.... a statue, a plain, old, boring statue. It's even made of anything cool.

you could say that about alot of things.

you could say that about the Statue of Liberty, or the Empire State Building, the Pyramids, or Stonehenge... I mean, the Statue of Liberty is a statue made of copper that even chemically changed color, the Empire State Building isn't the tallest building in the world, the Pyramids are just giant blocks of limestone stacked on top of each other meant to house one dead person, and Stonehenge is just a strange assortments of rocks.

I'm not saying that you have to feel that Christ the Redeemer in Rio means anything to you, but I am saying that you can't deny it is a symbol of Brazil and the rest of South America as a whole, along with representing it today.

depends on what aspects you look at, and how you define "wondrous"

It also depends on how you define "in", but that doesn't change the fact that out of all the bridges in the world, the golden state bridge does not stand out in any sort of wonderous way.. except for a purely sentimental one.

Well the Sydney Harbour Bridge is wider.
