Work in Progress - Conquests of Might and Magic III

If you just do a photoshop one I'll probably be able to figure out how to do it in GIMP. But if you can be bothered doing a GIMP tutorial as well that'd be great too!

I was unaware of the thread that is listed below... I am writing a tuturial up now to post there for Photoshop CS (previous and newer versions should be basically the same for what is needed).

What will armies be like? Same as normal civ, or the 1 unit carrying armies of MEM and elsewhere?

Newest units look great as usual!

I'm not sure yet about Armies. The main problem with Conquests IIRC was the speed issue. Once a unit is loaded into an Army, the Army gains +1 speed... and since the AI is so reluctant to slow the Army down, it won't load slower units into the Army. If the Army is loaded with the fastest available unit, it won't load anymore units in since no other unit would be fast enough. I think that was the 'New Feature' :) introduced into Conquests.

Tutorial: Changing Colors in Existing Units

Why not join the talk ?

Thank You for the link, had no idea it even existed. I'm writing up a tuturial now, and I will try to get it posted soon, but may not be until later tonight or tomorrow.

EDIT: Tuturial has been posted in link above. So let's all start making hordes of new recoloured units!!!! :)

I got another new idea, surprise surprise. As you may have already done the "Battle-Created Leader" names, I would just like to suggest to use some more people from the campaign if you haven't done these yet, e.g.:

Yog, Krewlod
Gem, AvLee
Crag Hack, Krewlod
Xeron, Eeofol
Gelu, AvLee
General Morgan, Erathia
Xenofex, Eeofol
Sandro (ofc you'd have done this!), Deyja
Finneas Vilmar, Deyja
Lord Haart, Deyja

Hope this helped (have my other ideas done so, btw?) :goodjob:

I recently saw Hikaro Takayama say that he doesn't have this problem with the armies in the FF Mod.

Really??? If that is the case, then that is great! I'll have to go view the thread to see if any details are mentioned.

So far, I have used them all! :) I am one who usually sticks to my guns, but all ideas help greatly, because they get me to thinking about it, and then I usually ending up working on it right away. I haven't added any names in yet, but I will now. Too bad I can't add their little portraits into the game. I don't recognize Finneas Vilmar off the top of my head though, as being a HOMM fanatic I should... I've been trying to get the units done, I need to move in 2 weeks, so I'll probably be absent for a while during the move. Hopefully I can get all the units finished before this.

BTW all, recolour tuturial is posted http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=253651.

If you want to use armies, make them transport only one unit at a time and give them a large hitpoint bonus (about as much as they would have if they had 3 units in them). The AI knows how to use this.

Add Finneas anyway :P and nice job so far! Keep going!!!! Can't wait for it to be released.

BRB, going through HOMM3 Birth of a Barbarian campaign. :)

Just an overall update on development status:

As far as units go, most units I need are availabe, and many upgraded creatures have been made through recolours. Some that I will need to make are:

Basilisk
Gorgon (may be able to use the Taurus, only difference is is that a Gorgon is a Taurus without Wings)
Psychic/Magic Elemental (might be able to find something to use)
Manticore (could do a C&P on the Taurus, to give it a scorpion tail and Lion head)
Behemoth (will have to look more closely to see if any potential close matches)
Bone Dragon
Gorynych (combo Dragon/Hydra, I think I remember seeing something I might be able to use)
Spear/Pike weilding Centaurs (I'm going to attempt a C&P version, I've located the best units to use that should make it easier to do, so we'll see how it goes)
Pixie - a C&P of some wings on a woman might work
Gog - fireball throwing demon (can probably come up with something here)

A few others that might need to be made, I was looking for Poser 5 or lower, as I know it was offered free at various times, but I was unable to locate it to make the additional units. If anyone finds anything for free Poser (legal, of course :)), please let me know and provide the link, I would appreciate it!

Most buildings have been put in... For creature buildings, they must be built in town in order to get creatures (buildings auto-produce them). Level 1 will always be available to be built from the start. Level 2 creatures can be directly built also, after researching the appropriate tech not far from the beginning of the tech tree. Level 1 and Level 2 Upgraded creatures cannot be built directly, but must have their creature buildings built in town (or gold can be used to upgrade the Lvl 1 and 2 base creatures).

For creature speed, right now it is set up for speeds between 1 and 4. Flying creatures are used as Land units, but have the ability to ignore movement costs over terrain. Movement rates along roads is set at 2 right now, but may be up'd to 3. Many of the creatures are speed 2 and over, so I don't believe this will be necessary to do. Units with Speed 1 are around 25-35 out of the total 160+ units that will be in the game.

I have test played an EPIC game (tech tree hasn't been created yet), and everything goes smoothly, the AI goes after resources like crazy (as it always does) which is good, because resources are absolutely VITAL to be able to build many town buildings and higher level units. The common resources (Wood and Ore) will have high chances of appearing, and the others will have fair chance in an EPIC game in case a faction does not get what it needs. This will not make games hopeless in case of locations that may be short of resources.

Ranged land units will have lethal bombard, as will spells. Certain units in HOMM3 have hand-to-hand damage penalties, this may be / may not be applied though (by halving their non-ranged Att/Def) because of AI shortcomings in using artillery. Some spells will have lethal sea as well to take out enemy ships, but naval won't be a major part of the game (in scenarios), but for Epic game, I will have to decide if to only include 1 ship type (as was in HOMM) or perhaps include a few more... not sure yet.

This may be a tough game to balance... I've initially used the HOMM creatures attack and defense values and used those for the A/D in Civ. Although HOMM combat worked very differently (it used damage ranges as well), this method may work, but will likely need many adjustments, so certain units aren't invincible. The fact that the game will need unit buildings to produce units will work well so that the AI doesn't solely produce the strongest units, and lower level units will still play a large role in the game since they can be directly built. A town with all creature structures built can produce around 60 creatures or more every 30 turns as it is set now. This may / may not be increased depending on how testing goes. That does not include being able to directly build other Lvl 1/2 creatures. And if you have a fully built Civ with 10 towns, that equates to about 600+ units in 30 turns (each turn is 1 Day). Although it will take much time and resources to fully build up a town, large full scale wars with many Heroes (Armies) involved and each Civ having fully unique units with different stats should make things interesting (if not a balance nightmare!).

There is a Unit called Behemoth in the Fallout mod by Thorgrimm. But I think he does NOT allow the usage of his work. But you should view it ,at least. It`s one of the most incredible looking Units ever produced for our game. btw: Fallout comes with a lot of never released Units.

The same is true for a scorpion like Unit. (Radscorpions)

I have looked out for the Bone Dragon. But even using Windows search function ,I was not able to find it. I was wondering about that ,because I could swear that I have one.

We have a Hydra Unit here.

I have looked for the Gog too. But still no luck.

I wanted to make a HoMM3 mod back in the days but got busy with my own mod and then gave up on modding; it's great to see someone will make this. Good luck :)

(haven't read the entire thread yet - will do so when i have more time)

It's fantastic how much you're getting done Tom in such a short amount of time. I'm well impressed by your progress! Keep up the good work :goodjob:

Some of those units you still need could prove difficult. I wonder if aaglo might be interested in making one or two of them. Is he still in the unit making business? His fantasy units are excellent.

That behemoth is an awesome looking unit! The animations and texture are terrific. I need a behemoth that looks more like a large yeti or something. :) I could possibly use the Radscorpion's tail to create a Manticore... that is if it was not a Thorgrimm unit, in that case I will not.

I may just dish out the doe and purchase an older version of poser and make em. I am somewhat familiar with the basics from 3ds Max and such. So there shouldn't be any massive learning curve required.

And Thank you for the links.

Modding does take an extensive amount of time to do... like a 2nd full time job. I won't have as much time starting in a few weeks, so I'll have to start making the most of what I have.

I don't think Aaglo's been around for a long time. I'll plan on making them myself, if I can create a decent looking unit and decent unit movements, then throwing a storyboard together is easy enough. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Of course, that will have to wait, I haven't used an Anti-Virus product in about 9 months (I try to avoid bad sites) but apparently that doesn't matter, since I seem to have gotten about a mega ton of virus' and trojans :) Cleaning them out should be fun and lengthy. As soon as I couldn't open up Photoshop this morning, I knew something wasn't right.

Isn't that a Hydra from AoM?

ALSO: Hydras and Chaos Hydras should have zone of control :3

I've PM'd Thorgrimm to see if he minds me using his Radscorpions tail. My first work of business (once I get my comp back up and running, I'm stuck in safe mode temporarily) is to create a pixie/sprite animation. I have found the models I need to use with Poser, so I can give those a test, and see how good and quick I can bust out a decent looking animation. If those go fairly good, then I can think about making all the rest I need myself.

The only reason I am reluctant to use the Chaos Harpy as my pixie is that pixies aren't supposed to give you nightmares, but be more like Tinkerbell (plus already using the Harpies)

Tom

Thank you, that is an excellent looking model, I will put it to good use... I have just purchased, downloaded and installed Poser. I will go through it and learn it for a while, get re-aquainted with everything I was learning graphics related (from 3ds Max days), and try to make a unit. It may be a few weeks or more before that happens, but hopefully it will go smoothly. There are quite a few sites with models available, so it shouldn't be a problem getting any models. I have found a few Bone Dragon models, but can't and will never be able to justify paying a $200 price tag for them.

Errrmm:mischief:
I don`t want to bring you down Tom ,but I have heard that it is a HELL animating legs.
Some formula like : the more legs ,the MORE difficult.
(taken from a talk between Vuldacon and Plontius. They should know ...)

But ... GOOD LUCK
