Total shock and disbelief, what manner of person could perpetrate such atrocities?

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have lost friends or family, or experience this first hand, and to the Nation as a whole.

The people responsible must be found and punished.

To Niceguy.

You make some good point's ,but i don't fully agree

There are a couple things killing those responsible will do. First, they will never be able to do it again. Right now, there is a continuing threat from whoever did this.

There is more than one country that harbour's terrorist. You can't fight all terrorists. And the one you kill a probanby soon to be replaced by recruited 20y'rs old that have no edducation ,no live or family ,and have nothing to lose.

Second, it tells the rest of the terrorist community that if they take similar actions, the brute force and intelligence capabilities of the United States will be brought to bear with one goal, their death.

That could be true ,but this was a suicide attack anyway. This guys weren't scared to die.And they probably could guess this American reaction already.

You cannot assure defense from terrorism, but you can act to deter it, and killing the terrorists you can identify is one step in that process.

Indeed you can not assure defense from terrorism.
You maybe can act to deter it ,but killing terrorists probably isn't the most effective way.
The painfull fact is that you really can't anything against this.I think that Bush has to review his foreing policy against middle east country's ,but in a way that the agression cool's down a bit.Because the world realy need's that now.America needs the sort of newfound peacefull relations with this states that it can't reach with war.Giving up youre support for Israël would be one thing to do first.Their is on fo the reasons of the terrorist agression towards you're nation.

I was thinking of all the people that want war now. Who are you going to go up against in a war? (maybe "up against" sin't the best word since you are the big guy but anyway...).

Wath if the terrorist were from...

...Afganhistan. Then you would maybe send in some fighters and missiles, right?

...Irak. The missilies again.

...Palestina. Same again.

...The United States of America. Then wath? With if it were som sick American guys who did it?

...Great Brittain or any other west allied. Will we se a missile attack for the US that destroys every military and important builings in London. As you have done before in Iraq?

This is definitely one of the great tragedies of modern or any times. My heart goes out to all those Americans or otherwise affected by this senseless event. I have shed tears for the first time in many, many years at the absolute sadness of it all.

I don't know what should be done. I can't begin to understand the feelings that course through the veins of so many innocent people at this moment. I pray for justice, and for peace. I desparately hope that this does not escalate, but if it does, I will do my duty for freedom and democracy

This has caused me to reassess my beliefs and positions on any number of things. I no longer bear any hatred for Bush, as he has a very hard road ahead of him, as do the American people.

This was a strike against us all, against the values of freedom, justice, openess and democracy that we hold dear, and that our forefathers and others shed blood for. this was an attack of sheer monstrosity, and I pray it is never repeated. I gave blood today, and even though it most probably will never reach the stricken folk of the US, I had to do something.

I extend my deepest sympathies, condolences and love to the innocent people of the US. In addition, I withdraw and humbly apologise for my comment on about page 4, where I said the Palestinians who celebrated so pervesely should be nerve gassed. That was a comment made in the heat of anger and grief.

I cannot begin to understand the grief and horror that is felt by the American people, but I speak for all the Aussies I know, and hopefully for all our nation when I say we are there with you all the way, no matter what happens. Our nations have a bond of blood, and we owe you for our salvation in the War. But even apart from that, we are all humans, and brothers and sisters. May God bless America, and God save Australia.

Anything I try to say will seem empty and facetious, but i will try all the same. We share your loss, and are there for you in your grief. as your allies and friendss, we are there with you, whatever it takes, all the way. My prayers and condolences go out to the bereaved, and I would like to express my happiness and relief that AoA's family turned out safe, and all others who were indelibely marked by this.

freaky stuff:

"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb" , "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"

"Fire in the new city,
the century merely a babe,
the two brothers fall on the field,
the five tiered ring is pierced thru,
panic in the streets as the leader struggles"

Duck Of Flanders

We agree that there is no way to assure defense against terrorism.

I said that killing the people who orchestrated this particular event would prevent them from doing it again. It may or may not be true that younger people would be recuited in the place of those who are killed, but the point is, whoever did this had resources and intelligence and training and planning. I'd rather go up against a bunch of newbies than this guy again.

You mention that you think killing those responsible might not be the best way to go about deterring terrorism.

It sounds like you suggest doing what the terrorists want as a way of getting them to leave us alone. On the face of it, this seems simple enough, but how much do the terrorists want? How far would we have to go to make them happy? When they figure out that by threatening innocent people they can get what they want, how often will they use that tool? How many people will have to live in terror all the time? How can you predict when it will stop?

Negotiating with terrorists is a no win situation. They get what they want, or they kill hostages, or whatever, and if you ever give them what they want, they have that much more reason to do it again.

If you let them know that terrorism will not get them anything of value, and that it will put them on the endanger species list, you remove any logical reason for terrorism to occur. Granted, this will not stop it entirely, but appeasement encourages terrorism, it doesn't deter it.

I don't think missles are the answer. You've got to use people. Highly trained people. If some of the terrorists came from the U.S., you hunt them down in the U.S. and put them through the criminal justice system, if you can take them alive without danger to those doing the taking.

If they came from the U.K., the government there would be happy to help us get a hold of them, and bring them to the U.S. for trial.

If they live in another country, and that country doesn't feel like helping bring them to justice, we go in and get them ourselves.

There is no need for large scale destruction. I think such attacks (missle) would be counter-productive. We don't want to kill the citizens of countries that harbor terrorists, we want to kill the terrorists, and bring to justice those who give them measurable aid.

War is not required, nor do I desire it. I bet, and hope, the most U.S. citizens also want specific justice, not general revenge oriented retaliation.

Everyone who has expressed sympathy, or empathy, or condolences, or whatnot, thanks. It is nice to know that it is not only the U.S. that is shocked and dismayed by this attack.

For those who seem to be implying that somehow we, as a nation, brought this on ourselves... I can't think of a nice way to put what I'm thinking.

Christ haken.
It was a bunch of terrorists, not a country.
You don't blow up the country that they are from, UNLESS the country is hiding them

I had my day off yesterday. Spend most of the day watching the news. Is there anything known about the forum members here? Is everyone allright?

My condolances to those on this forum and to the rest of America who might have lost friends, family or other relatives. This is so terrible. I felt the urge to cry when I saw the first pictures on television.

OK, I will give an updat eon the death toll, it saddens me thinking about it, but I will give this anyway, there is nothing on TV that doesn't have to do with it and the radio mentions it at least once an hour on the FM stations

266 are known dead by planes
190 are confirmed dead in the Pentago
186 are confirmed dead in the WTC
4736(or somewhere close to there) civiliansare still missing
200 firefighters 70 police and a smaller amount(sorry, I forget this too) of other rescue, recovery officials are missing
6 firefighters were recovered alive today
estimateds of the dead are just over 5000 by the AP.

I am just saying the facts in this post that were given to me by CNN and MSNBC(and every other channel until I just decided to flip to the most reliable source)

8 have been taken in regarding knowledge of the events and 1 has been arrested for using a fake ID and saying he weas a pilot

Yes, we can.

And yes, we in America will.

Perhaps some other nations will join us, perhaps not. Either way, we will hunt down and destroy the terrorist organizations year after year, until the job is "done". Perhaps it will never be fully "done". But the only things that will stop us in the US Military are the Lord's will, or a traitor (such a Bill Clinton or Al Gore) in the White House.

So yes, we will fight all terrorists. The price for cowardice, apathy, or the usual Clinton-esque betrayal of America is just too great.
