Everyone will say Canberra but it's actually probably Darwin or one of the regional cities (Geelong, Wollongong, Launceston). Canberra is tops.

I honestly would never have thought that someone would answer Canberra to this question. For all its flaws, it's not ugly.

Lynchburg, VA, Durham, NC, and Gary, IN all get big votes. I know the news has made it a Big Deal recently, but Charleston, SC for the past good part of 40 or so years has had such a gross income inequality gap added on by overt racism. The parts which you can consider "nice" are putrid scum underbellies of excess and bizarre fetishism with whatever "traditions" (This also includes the faux-liberal inhabitants of the city in places like Summerville and James Island).

That was a different guy. The guy Lynchburg is named after was just some ferry master or something. Lynchburg is also home to Liberty University, a major sanatorium for the mentally ill founded by Jerry Falwell.

On the topic of Virginia, Petersburg is pretty awful too. I think overall I might cast my vote for East St Louis, IL. For larger cities, I'd say maybe Bakersfield or Stockton.
