Obama has tweeted the following so Joe's gonna stay in there.

I'm with sticking with Biden. I can live with 4 more years of Trump if that is what happens.
Not much possibility of replacement happening.

Too much inertia. Dramatic and fun to talk about but nobody is going to have the courage to be the man who makes that call.

This didn't just suddenly happen. Think about the massive lie that the administration has been telling all along. But here we have Obama picking the lie back up and trying to pass this off as a bad night.

It wouldn't be one person. It would be whatever party previously made up the infamous "smoke-filled room" (superdelegates?) It would have to involve persuading Biden himself that it was necessary. That his stepping aside is how he can now best serve his country.

But the Trump campaign doesn't have to do a single thing between now and November but play the 11-minute mark of that debate.

Incidentally, it's not even that he lost his train of thought. That does happen. I once drew an absolute blank in a crucial conversation, and I was in my forties, so senility was not the likely cause. The way out of it would be to say as much "Huh! I've lost my train of thought. I'll yield the rest of my time." The problem is that he just petered out.

So this moment is a good time to think about how democracy has failed us. Voters should never be allowed to have the only word on who the nominees are. Trump never gets close to the nominatio under the old system. Biden would never have had the chance to run again under the old system.

Take the primary vote away from the mob. Before it's too late.

Even if there are two consecutive contrary cases, it's still best to leave things to the voters. Biden isn't really even a case, moreover, he's a case of the principle that you always go with an incumbent.

Coming here a little late, I hope this has not been posted. Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, not two people who I had anything good to say about when in power (left of the tories and right of labour) but seem to talk some sense these days, give an interesting but brutal review of the debate and really talk up the possibility of an alternative. Currently Biden is about 1/2 on for wining the nomination.
Spoiler Why Joe Biden must step down :

Its "I do not seek and will not accept the nomination of my party time" not gonna happen but we are done.

The way to go is to give the voters about 50% of the say and party super delegates the rest. This would change the dynamic that sees would be candidates drop out early. Instead, they would stick around and use their delegates to bargain at the convention. This would give all wings of the party more say on the party platform and gives a way to block a wild card like Trump.

This is basically why I left the Republican party. Allowing themselves to be taken over by Trump exposed the party as useless. Now the Democrats are failing the same test.

This is unreal, not? Would I have been a US citizen, voting for Dems, rather than Reps, would be a no-brainer. Just like I vote for liberals/progressives (but never socialists, ughhhh) over conservatives when I can in NL/EU.
But these two horrific senile imbeciles (sorry, can't seem to find nice words) really do represent the oldest proper democracy in the world?
Unreal!

among many other things they have to prepare a proper way to "stab a country in the back" for some reason to keep face . So , Bidon was held down . In a format or whatever that did not allow . Like he has been giving rousing speeches , right ?

also , it is the end of Democracy in America , however fake it was and so on . In case people have never encountered the notion , America is not the world .

Nor I. But you should watch the debate (at least the 11 minute mark) in order to understand the concern about its potential impact on swing voters.

What you and others are witnessing is the very essence of post ideology: it is not how one advances their own vision for the world across a broad front, so much as how they position themselves in relation to others to curry favor for whatever group they exist within that minute.

- No one (and I mean no one) in the electorate actually likes Joe Biden. But he stands opposite of the perceived chaos if anyone besides him were to win, and so people support him. Despite being feeble and indecisive, which I guess is a sort-of "calm" but not in the sense of self-control so much as physical weakness.

- There is some more tangible like for Trump but it is (mostly) merely attitudinal. He really has no interest in advancing American values on the world stage a la Reagan and Bush 1&2 (in fact, resoundingly repudiating those three, as well as American exceptionalism in general), but will try his hardest to say the few things those who will shower him with praise think it best for him to say, all for some dopamine hit.

I'm very much interested in how others outside the US perceive this election.

it is Governance these days . Create hate between two equal groups and keep it up in every possible way and there exists only one who can save the group from barbarians , the hated others in the very same country . Every shameful act , way beyond human foibles is ignored and dedication to the cause is declared in some pavlovian reflex stuff . And what's the alarm , American has been doing that same exact thing for quarter of a century in my country , you have what , Tea Party weirdos and MAGA weirdos ? Wait until China threatens military intervention as Clinton , Dabya , Obama , Trump , Bidon have done whenever the not exactly brilliant operators came close to crashing and a new hope appeared for Turkey .

And yet, Old Joe’s physical infirmity is not the thing that should horrify us. Everyone ages, everyone withers. No, it is the moral infirmity of the Democratic establishment that is truly chilling. It is those who are so bent on power that they’ll force a frail man on to the world stage to do their bidding who deserve our ire. It is the media movers and shakers who said ‘Joe is fine’, and who damned the concerned as ageist cranks, who have behaved atrociously. Behind Biden’s physical decay is the far graver problem of the moral decay of a ruling class that will lie, gaslight and bully just to stay on top.
